@mmasnick @jmiers230

All of this because authoritarians lose their minds at even the suggestion that they might actually be deeply unpopular.

I'm not trying to be frivolous, I genuinely believe that's what this all boils down to. Nothing pisses authoritarians off more than that XKCD comic that suggests being banned from online spaces is a response to unpopularity. They are attacking 230, and taking a lot of other actions besides, in order to make it illegal to suggest online that someone is unpopular.

Who's 'they?' Wellllllllllll, we can't avoid saying it: it's Republicans. People like Devin Nunes and all his silly lawsuits against people who criticize him. People like Elon Musk, who bought and then promptly broke Twitter in order to prove to us how popular he is. People who put a lot of time and money and energy into opposing Gigi Sohn's nomination.

But the fact is that authoritarian beliefs ARE EXTRAORDINARILY UNPOPULAR. They will always be unpopular on social media, and the people who hold them will never be okay with that. They won't rest until they can jail the people who criticize them.

Under Tennessee’s trans ban (and many others being considered) Mrs. Doubtfire would be illegal, as would some Shakespeare productions, most Monty Python sketches, MASH, the movie White Chicks, and so many other classic works.

Conservatives in the US are a joke at this point. Either they’re too fucking stupid to realize it, or they really do want to put “others” in camps. Journalists should be asking them which it is.

No doubt I’ve mentioned this before on other similar sightings, but there’s something purrrfectly pleasing about spotting a sticker—in this case, way up high on a street-sign post—made by friends in a far, far, faraway city nowhere near the one you’re currently meandering around.

It’s as if they are sending you a big, warm-and-fuzzy, kitty-cat cuddly hug, just for you! Or a secret shared wink of recognition that even if oceans and pandemics and other big things have kept you from seeing them for too long, you’re sure that you still both hate the police and would love to see each other again.

So even if @svartkattprints is curled up in a snowy Sweden, and I’m walking quietly as if on cat’s paws through the snow-covered streets of Tio’tia:ke/Montreal, a tiny sticker created by them in a distant land that somehow strayed here is more than enough to melt away some of the chill of these “cat”astrophic times.

Think I'm going to start using wording "Republican controlled areas" in place of dismissive terms like "red states". Same way our media would talk about areas under control of "warlords" or similar in other parts of the world.

Adams is proudly a skeptic on all of these matters, and as a general rule, which is unsurprising; skepticism is a common posture among those who believe that reality must be mediated through and approved by them in order to be deemed real by the rest of us.

Again, Adams’ authority for positioning himself an arbiter of reality is that he created Dilbert, which looks like it was drawn by a modestly talented 11-year old, and has in recent years incorporated anti-diversity and anti-trans material.

This is part of the Assen-Groningen "cycling superhighway". It's four metres wide (+ an extra metre at the left for pedestrians) and will eventually stretch the entire 30 km distance between the two cities. There are already other excellent routes, but this will hopefully let us cycle at a higher average speed as we shouldn't have to stop for traffic. Unfortunately, construction of some parts has been stalled recently.

"Fun" fact - white supremacy is really bad for (most) white people!

Here are some things white people lost out on because of racism:

-Walkable cities (because white flight post Civil Rights mean the creation of the suburbs)
-Good, cheap public transit (because they didn't want Those People to go to the newly created suburbs
-Universal single-payer health care (because You Know Who would be "welfare queens")
-Police who are accountable to the public (need to keep Wink Wink Nudge Nudge in line)
-Progressive taxation (because white people can pull themselves up by the bootstraps, just like Elon Musk, and not like I Bet You Can Probably Guess Who)
