Thanks for boosts / follows - they motivate me to keep putting out work on this platform!
Neesa worked as a translator for a private client, translating a great tome from one imaginary language to another. When the tube spat her out on that particular morning, and she walked toward the stairs and corridors leading to her work rooms, she glanced up at the clock and calendar of the Great Timepiece, and realized that it had been twenty-five years, to the day, since she was first hired for the project. #amwriting
@secretsloth @futurebird The desire of capitalists to turn every software program into a service for rent extraction is a huge problem.
Too many consumers accept this model, and too many developers who consider web technologies to be the foundation of all software are helping them.
We risk loosing the "personal" computer if traditional desktop software goes away.
A while back, I stumbled upon a file I consider the largest piece of evidence revealing how hundreds of data brokers trade personal data on everyone, including super-sensitive data, globally.
Massive investigation by US-based @themarkup and German @netzpolitik_feed, I think this is a must-read for everyone interested in the future of digital technology:

This is exactly why I post things like this. It angers me that government has stopped doing what we once thought was its primary role: keeping us safe. And this is why I believe we MUST build new forms of civil social communications that we can use to recalibrate and serve a better society that stops relying solely on government to live our only lives with maximum healthy, safety, and happiness. Because we can.
Online communities are real communities. People have met future spouses, weathered difficult life events, organized politically, raised money to help each other all through the panoply of social websites.
Often community rules and culture are guided by moderators, who almost always work for free.
Despite all of this we generally accept that these are not the people who own the website or the ones who control its fate.
Over and over this creates heartache and disappointment.

An excellent post on "the real obligations of truth" by @jeffjarvis , who attended the hearing for the lawyer who used ChatGPT in his filings. Worth your time.

What we mean when we say Indigenous land is 'unceded'
To be more precise: the Maritimes, nearly all of British Columbia and a large swath of eastern Ontario and Quebec, which includes Ottawa, sit on territories that were never signed away by the Indigenous people who inhabited them before Europeans settled in North America. In other words, this land was stolen. (It's worth noting that territories covered by treaties also weren't necessarily ceded — in many cases, the intent of the agreements was the sharing of territory, not the relinquishing of rights.)

Apparently Reddit has now banned a subreddit dedicated to the Fediverse Reddit-alternative Kbin:

If you're on a centralised platform like Reddit, this is what they can do. Centralised platforms have all-powerful leaders who can do whatever they want, and you have no alternatives if you disagree.
The point of the Fediverse being on lots of servers is that each server's power is limited. If you disagree with one server's actions, you can move.
Mabel’s been kind this morning and set a relatively untaxing trio of ‘Spot the Dog’ options. The sun must be getting to her.
