Please join me in sharing a big “thank you” on behalf of us newer #Mastodon users to all the folks at @Mastodon including @Gargron and the team, as well as the Instance admins and existing user base, and everyone else in the #fediverse. You all created an amazing, innovative platform that is finally getting the recognition it deserves and provides a better alternative to legacy #socialmedia platforms that are currently imploding. My sincere thanks!

Meet Eugene Rotchko (@Gargron), founder of @Mastodon, who just got a profile in TIME magazine. I encourage you to really read the entire excellent interview, bc not only will you learn more about the ethos behind Mastodon, but you can also hear what it’s like for an intelligent human being to talk about social media.

Since we're sharing, my #WIP is a #NA romantic fantasy Little Red Riding Hood fae retelling about arranged marriages, untested magic, best friends-to-lovers, and of course, wolves. Tell me about yours!

@hannes_ullrich @fetzert @lstmpsmdrns @paulgp Enjoyed this thread and ensuing conversation. Just on the difficulty of verification on a decentralised system: perhaps the concept of a "web of trust" could help en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_of_t

We can kind of do this manually by checking the "followers" list of someone we're looking to follow. But if Mastodon could systematise this checking, I reckon that may work better for verification than the current way. Like, I'm "verified" but only according to me!

Can I ask a favour?

I'm really grateful to be recommended as a follow, but can you also mention the website (fedi.tips) when you do so?

At the moment getting a lot of questions which are answered on the site, and it's difficult to keep up with every question. I'm happy to keep answering, but also afraid I'll miss someone's question.

If they know about the site from the beginning, they will have a chance of finding the answers themselves if I do miss their question.

Thanks 🙏

Everyone is saying "The server which you join is irrelevant, they are all federated anyway."

That's not entirely true.

I think a better way of putting it would be "You won't know which server to join before you have joined, so don't overthink it - just make the inevitable mistake and fix it later"

Wow, seems like a LOT of people are coming to the . Looks like the gamedev.place is kinda dying of success like .social.

Let's hope the infrastructure gets better soon!

I’m in industry now. I miss seeing my name on publications. I don’t miss using ramen noodles as part of my budget.
There is something wrong with a system where the highest educated have a ramen noodle line in their budget. I don’t think it’s gotten better since I started receiving a salary.

OMG! This newbie just discovered "slow mode" and my life has changed for the better! Now I can control the rate of new toots being added to the various columns on my dashboard. Just go to Settings/Preferences and make sure the "slow mode" box is checked. Perfect! :)

Just to mention: I'm combining and this year, in that each Fling (okay, chapter) of the book this year is headed by an image I made in MJ, and the words are (to a greater or lesser extent) inspired by or reflective of the image.

Some of the images are more or less random (with a prompt like "illustration for chapter nine"), others are more specifically created.

Yay crossovers. :)

@NadiaBernaz I wrote a short thread on #Twitter. I believe #TwitterMigration hurts 2 groups. Those monetising because of their Twitter fame, and those who need Twitter to be heard. I want to focus on the latter.

The 2nd group contains a lot of subgroups. Black Twitter, #Disability Twitter, #HumanRights defenders, dissidents, #trans activists, asylum seekers, #refugees, whistleblowers etc.

I can’t leave.

I wanted to host my own personal Mastodon because my online identity should be in the hands of me instead of a platform and its leadership. Mastodon Federation seems to be working way better since the last time I gave it a try. Let's see how much of an operation burden this will become in the long term.

More random #security thoughts:

1. Mastodon is pretty chill but expect a surge of troll activity with all the attention. Nothing is totally immune to the challenges associated with attention/scale.
2. Try to be open to new followers but check them out - Who do they follow? Who follows them?
3. Block quickly at any hint of malicious behavior/hate/trolling. Don't engage. Keep the vibe positive.
4. If you see patterns of abuse share that information with your followers.

Multiplying someone's good idea:
"To help make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same."

#Introduction! I'm Sam.

I'm a hobby programmer (mostly Rust these days -- feel free to check out github.com/sts10/). Interested in passwords/passphrases, privacy, Linux, Neovim, etc. Occasionally blog about those things here: sts10.github.io/

Been happily reading a lot of books this year (novels and non-fiction). Let's trade recommendations?!

I'm physically disabled, something that I almost never talk about, but probably should!

I've worked as a social media editor at CNN and BuzzFeed News, though am looking for a new job at the moment...

Been on here since '17 if you have questions!

Picking a Mastodon instance is a lot like picking a Linux distro. It seems complicated because you get a lot more options but it doesn't really matter and you don't have to commit to one to the exclusion of others if you find that you don't like the one you picked first.
