Don’t make fun of their belly apron. It’s not only rude, it’s ignorant. A lot of cats develop a flap of skin on their lower belly.

Because this is not because they are fat. It is because they are fast.

It hangs down because it is loose. It helps them run faster.

This flap, known as an “apron,” helps the cat stretch out their legs for a longer stride. After all, cheetahs have them. And nobody thinks cheetahs are fat.

This cat has traveled from China to Omaha to San Francisco to be sleeping here by my side. We found him in a stairwell in our Beijing apartment, and we only moved to the States because Australian quarantine wouldn't let us take him home. So much of my life wouldn't have happened if he hadn't found us. All cats are miracles, but sometimes I think, especially this one.

We’ve known for a long time that plastic recycling doesn’t work, but we continue to pretend it does because the plastic industry has a grip on everything we buy. I can only hope for my kids’ sake we start taking this more seriously and look for sane legislation and alternative packaging solutions and address this. Even when you care and try to avoid plastic it feels borderline impossible most days.

Mastinator is a service that allows a person to anonymously follow people on the fediverse. No big deal you think? Your public posts are probably already anonymously viewable from your public profile anyways and all it is doing is aggregating public info? That is what its creator claims---it is just a convenience service!

Well no, it is mode concerning than that. It does this aggregation by following any account a mastinator user types into its service then replicating *all* your non-DM posts into a sort of "proxy inbox" in the mastinator.com domain that is completely out of your control and viewable by everyone!

In other words, if you are followed by mastinator.com it effectively turns your follower-only posts into public posts and lets people you have blocked keep following you by following the mastinator replica of your posts!

Innocent intentions or not this violates user consent.

Everything you post anywhere on the internet is public. At this point, no one should be surprised that "private" or "locked" or "followers only" communication is routinely scraped, indexed, archived & parsed by 3rd parties

Facebook's pixel, search index bots, or university researchers, just assume your communication is being copied and stored

It would be nice if these things operated ethically and obtained consent, but most of them don't
