Well, okay, I joined #BookWyrm. I am not excited about it so far, though, and I guess it's mostly just because the first thing I want to do is enter a whole bunch of books I've read, but it seems to insist that I GIVE IT THE DATE THAT I FINISHED for every book.
I don't remember! Why should I have to remember? Or alternately why should I have to lie?
A plea to journalists covering the Fediverse:
If you want to pitch a story and the only people you can think of to talk to are Gargron and the Journa Host admin, please don't.
Instead, use the time you saved to learn more about how this network functions, who the people behind ActivityPub are (and what that even is), who the people keeping instances running are, who the people moderating instances are; you can even get your hands dirty by digging through the Mastodon GitHub issue queue and learn why exactly some design decisions ended up the way they did, it's all right there!
Mastodon is not off-brand Twitter. You do this entire community a massive disservice by painting it as such, and you do our profession a disservice by expressing a complete lack of curiosity about this community before you report on it.
Thank you.
A barber in Buffalo turned his shop into a shelter for 50 people during the killer blizzard. They slept in the chairs and the floor with barber capes as blankets.

Is there a proof that, say, the number represented by taking the decimal expansion of pi and removing all of the 3's, is still irrational?
(It's relatively easy to construct an irrational number that is rational if you remove all the 3's, so it's at least a nontrivial question. I think!)
Hi @bookstodon I would love to see a photo of your favorite #ReadingNook! Let's share!
Rilke died on this day in 1926 and left us his abiding wisdom on how to live with our human limitations – a beautiful reading and reflection by physicist @bgreene https://www.themarginalian.org/2020/12/25/brian-greene-rilke/
Did you know that on this day in 1675, Charles II issued A Proclamation for the Suppression of Coffee Houses, in response to the growing controversy about the increasing numbers of coffee houses in London. There had actually been a ‘Womens Petition Against Coffee’ a year before raising the complaint that use of coffee houses to sober up after drinking sessions before returning home was increasing impotence in their men. The male response suggested it actually enhanced their libidos #FoodHistory

public safety reminders/info:
COVID infections are surging right now, alongside influenza and RSV still being major issues. if you are seeing family for the holidays please get vaccinated (for flu and the new covid booster) and wear masks as much as possible in public.
hospitals are already full and ER wait times are into the multiple days in some places. if you live in the US you are entitled to more free COVID tests thru the USPS. get them and use them before and after trips. if you get sick, contact your primary care doctor asap to get a paxlovid Rx in the first 5 days on infection, this can reduce symptoms and prevent severe damage to your heart, lungs, and brain as a result of an unmitigated COVID infection.
stay smart, stay safe. 💉😷💊
Mastodon user question; answered!
To answer my own question :) at least in this particular case one can just search with any made-up username whatever on the domain, like @flurb , and then use the kebab menu on the (fake) profile page that comes up, to block the domain.
(I actually used a DM first, but realized that wasn't necessary.)
Ok, so I just read this thread and now need to lie down and ponder.
There is a ton to chew on here, as @jimstewartson pulls together history, literature, philosophy, and more from Elon Musk's posts, family, and colleagues. This is a compelling and frankly horrifying presentation of Musk- what he has stated and where he is trying to go. Many links and screenshots to support the thread.
Twitter is small fries. What happens when/if #Oligarchs run #OurFuture?

It can be difficult to find hope in such a cynical time, but remember this:
Small actions and victories lead to bigger ones, and the improbable becomes possible.

Mastodon user question
Is there a way (in a #qoto client especially) for a user to block a domain without pointing at a user of that domain and opening the menu there?
(And yes, this is because I want to block the evil mastinator.com, and since it's a read-only domain it has no users to point to.)
(Hm, maybe if I try to have it follow me, that will result in my UI listing it among my followers, and I can use that to block it?)
A consciousness somehow associated with matter.
Posting about culture, philosophy, politics, AI Art Tools, NaNoWriMo, Software Development occasionally, the relationship of consciousness to matter.
