Finished Jane Smiley’s new novel, A Dangerous Business, about two sex workers investigating the murder of several girls in Monterey, California, 1853. An oddly unmysterious mystery, with a strangely detached voice, that’s true subject seems to be the nature of man. I see why reviews have not been great, but unlike some readers, I was not turned off by the book’s focus on sex work, or by Smiley’s invention of a brothel that serviced women. I’ll keep reading whatever she publishes. #bookstodon
