Ok, this explanation is great as to what "DMs" are on Mastodon. OK.

So, the fatal flaw is to call them DMs. Because they are not. They are "mention-only visibility" posts. Only people mentioned in the post can see it. That is not a DM, and it is not a Group Chat either.

Pauli Murray was queer, non-binary, and a brilliant trailblazer in so many areas. Pauli was a legal scholar whose writings influenced Thurgood Marshall and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Pauli was the first African American to graduate with a doctorate from Yale Law, a cofounder of the National Organization for Women, the first African American woman to be ordained an Episcopal priest and was later elevated to Sainthood.
