Homemade cherry pies (and a crisp) from Montmorency (sour pie) cherries grown in our back yard. Nom.

@AnarchoNinaWrites Instead of silencing the orcas, why don't the libs debate them in the free marketplace of ideas?

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like ``I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive....'' And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: ``Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?''

@irenes That's the thing, even if the people involved have good intentions, they'll wind up either powerless or coopted when the innately exploitative and dominance-based nature of the corporation leads it to doing exploitative and dominance-based things.

I saw one of the Mastodon instance admins who's interested in working with the say "the Meta folks have been great", well yeah, it's their *job* to get you to like them.

The creative noncompliance is pretty awesome. I just got the following from my daughter, Shadi.

——

Some other good ones: r/aww, r/shittymoviedetails, r/PokémonGo, r/forbiddensnacks - all John Oliver.

r/wellThatSucks only posts pictures of vacuums now (and some John Oliver)

r/egg_irl only allows eggs.

r/shitposting will delete your comment if it uses a specific letter, or if you’ve made a certain number of posts/upvotes that month (“to pwotec the delicate fwower known as weddits pwecious swervers from rampant overuse”)

r/memes will only allow memes about medieval/landed gentry (apparently the CEO called mods the landed gentry or smthing).

A lot of subs removed their specific guidelines and only go by reddit ToS now. Leading to things like -
r/3dshacks(“3DS Hacks”) now getting a ton of posts about “3D Shacks”. Or r/iOS full of posts like “Not getting calls when my phone is off?”, etc.

r/piracy made a post saying by forcing them to reopen, reddit has given a tacit endorsement for digital piracy.

r/scams is going to take 2 weeks to approve any posts.

And some communities are doing things like having users swear a ton so they can mark themselves as nsfw which kills ad revenue.

All extant meta TLDs are preemptively defederated from hackers.town, and @antimeta is a bot created by @j4yc33 that exists to detect and report on new ones.

I suggest you follow it.

@GigaByte4711 has created a importable blocklist for the extant ones... it can be found here:

@stux We are here because of corporate greed and malfeasance. That has not changed. The fox is coming to the hen house. How many times must we be subjected to the outright manipulation and aggressive abuse of these shareholder run organizations? This isn't about the users. They can be blocked. Please stop defending the corporations' platforms whose sole purpose is to make money off of their users, especially in light of the Reddit debacle. Federation doesn't change the philosophy of a company.

No Labels, the "centrist' organization whose actual plan is to burn down Biden, is a fraud. politico.com/news/2023/06/13/n They'll drop out and not run a candidate if the Republican nominee is -- Ron DeSantis. They've raised $70M from the EXACT SAME billionaires backing DeSantis.

For someone who likes sci-fi I don't spend enough time thinking about long distance space travel.

I admire the stories that avoid "warp drives" or "worm holes" -- though such a thing isn't a dealbreaker. I just think it's admirable to deal with the upsetting immensity of space on its own terms.

But if you want to avoid hand-waving you need to really think about how people deal with time, delayed communication, etc.

What is your favorite way that a sci-fi story did "long distance" ?

Like, I already been a couple inches away from being a terrorist. More than once. The last time, the only reason it didn't happen I suspect is because Trump never really could figure out a single definition for 'Antifa' and never figured out "terrorist is foreign, hate group is domestic."

This is not really a joke. I'm being dead serious with you.

So, my instance admin (#stux) thinks #Meta is good, by default, and will need evidence that their behavior in the #Fediverse is negative.

This is deliberately ignoring the history of #Meta, #Facebook, and #MarkZuckerberg, which is a trait I've seen too often in my life, and especially since 2015, in white men, especially, other white people, and their sycophants.

#Meta, by default, is horrible. How they behave in the Fediverse, if they connect, remains to be judged.

@chris_e_simpson Here’s a fantastic little stop-motion video from scientist Emily Fairfax demonstrating how beavers help create fire refugia. It may be my single favorite example of science communication. 🦫

I’m reading #HowFascismWorks by #JasonStanley snd he reminds me that a “national shift to “majority-minority”country SIGNIFICANTLY increased politically unaffiliated white Americans’ support for right-wing policies.”
They see it as a “threat to their dominant (social, economic, political, and cultural)
status.”

“The exploitation of the feeling of victimization, by dominant groups”…” is a universal element of contemporary intl fascist politics.”

Ergo, IMO—low or no empathy in this mind set.

You: You haven't spent your Sunday chasing bees round the garden with your camera then drawing on the photos have you?

Me: What?! That sounds like a foolish way to waste an afternoon!

Also me: Yes, yes I have.

subtoot at literally everyone, snark, leftism

📎💬 it looks like you're blaming a specific problem on "capitalism" without addressing the intertwined and interpenetrating effects of white supremacy, cis/hetero/patriarchy, colonialism, and other systems of oppression, as well as the specific and often local/regional historical events that led to the current circumstances, leading me to believe you don't actually understand what you're discussing! would you like help with that? too fucking bad, i'd rather take a nap or look at a bug, just know that it mildly annoys me every time you do this
