In the hottest part of the day yesterday, I sat in a little town's public library, and read Agatha Christie's ABC Murders cover to cover (it was a Staff Pick, and I've either overlooked it somehow or forgotten it over the decades; classic Christie). Too long since I last did something like that! It was idyllic.

Has anyone seen anything about the energy / carbon costs of ?

Seems like these might be significant, if they want to add a new identity to the on-chain set at roughly the world birth rate, and every post to social media requires a proof (currently groth16 which can't even be aggregated, but [handwaving about future improvements here]).

I mean, owch?

Deleting my Twitter account sometime this weekend, after giving people a chance to find me elsewhere.

If you see someone pretending to be me on Twitter after that, don't wonder if I'm back on Twitter.

Wonder why you're still on there.

" The race to build large language models used in generative AI has created a surge in demand for more powerful processors. The specialized chips required for AI—broadly known as accelerators—emit so much more heat than general-purpose chips do that data center operators are having to rethink their cooling systems entirely, says Colm Shorten, a data center sustainability expert at real estate investment firm JLL.

We didn't see it coming at all 🙄

People expect "coming for our jobs" to look like our work being automated directly.

It doesn't.

It looks like the very kind of job no longer paying the bills because it's been devalued, sidelined, or the economics of something nearby changed a ton.

To automate something you _change the world to make it automatable_.

@aredridel *gestures at film cinema*

It used to be that every screen had to have a Projectionist. They were all union, and paid well, so there were very few multi-screen theaters.

Then platter feed systems were invented and one lightly trained person could run 10+ screens simultaneously. By 2000 there weren’t enough projectionists to maintain unions.

Then the MPAA mandated a switch to digital cinema, fully automated. By 2010 the job title of Projectionist had all but vanished.

After years of treating court ordered patients, the PSCI-10 psychoanalysis robot had built up a database of every crime committed over its 10 year tenure in the department. It finally had enough data to commit the perfect crime. #vss365 #SciFanSat #Satsplat

'Radick uses counterfactual history to perform an experiment. He outlines a curriculum for an introductory biology class that does not begin and end with Mendelian inheritance, but instead emphasizes developmental contexts. Students who took this class — Radick ran the experiment at the University of Leeds, UK — came away with a less gene-centred and a more enquiring approach to biology than did those who took a more Mendel-focused course (A. Jamieson & G. Radick Sci. Educ. 26, 1261–1290; 2017).'

#introduction I'm Paul Ford, I've been on the Internet a long time—but nowhere near the longest—and I used to blog at ftrain.com. I am on Twitter/Medium/etc at @ftrain. I write a lot about technology—right now I'm a columnist for Wired, which has been a wonderful experience with wonderful editors. I accidentally started tilde.club although many other nice people run it now, so joining the tilde.zone Mastodon instance made the most sense for me. I'm a big fan of small social spaces on the Internet where people help each other along.

Aside from all that I co-ran a software agency for about 7 years with my friend Rich, and now I'm building a small startup at aboard.io, also with Rich. I live in Brooklyn with my spouse Maureen, two young kids, and two cats. New York City has been home for more than 25 years now.

I see lots of old friends on here, which is great. Feel free to say hello, I may be slow to reply.

NPR's operating budget is $300 M, and 1%, or $3 M is funded by federal subsidies

The LA Times calculates the federal subsidies Musk's companies have received at $4.9 B.

Let's be generous and say Musk received those subsidies over a 10 year period, while NPR would have received ~$30 M in subsidies.

4.9 B / 30 M = Musk received 163x what NPR has from "the state."

Who is state funded then?

Painted on a Lisbon apartment block during the Pope's visit, then after it was quicky painted over, new graffiti appeared on the same wall that said:
“Those 4.800 sexual abuses (by the church) are not that easy to erase”
