I can not state how annoying it is at times to use an M1 machine with R and try to use packages dependent on other packages that hate M1.
@adrienne I ran into some wild Haskell compiler dependency right when Apple Silicon came out. 
I think it was a bottleneck to shiny running natively maybe?
@marcoshuerta @adrienne I jave seen other users complaining about that. out of curiosity how did you installed R on your M1 ? might seems naive but are you aware if conda ?
@adrienne @marcoshuerta sorry for the typos (was back from a party) have a look at https://docs.conda.io/projects/miniconda/en/latest/ if you are familiar with python, it is somewhat similar to pip. once you install it it will resolve any shitty dependency by downloading precompiled binaries (matching all of the requirement) matching your architecture into an isolalated environment. you activate your conda environment and everything installed is at hand. and if anything goes wrong, cleaning is as easy as deleting your env folder. your os is untouched. safe, efficient, convenient.
for R install r-base. packages can be installed with the naming convention : r-[name of your fav package]. there is also a dedivated conda r channel, just add "--channel r" as option when looking for package. cheers 😊
