In German, the word "modern" has 2 meanings:
- modern (pronounced "modérn")
- to rot ("módern")

So, "modern modern" could describe an avant-garde style of decay.
And someone writing "Ich bevorzuge modern" probably likes it modern - or maybe prefers to rot...
