"The immunology behind the pandemic and, even more importantly, guidance to prevent severe disease, began to be lost in a sea of misinformation and deliberate disinformation, turning the pandemic into a political football. This led to confusion, and tragically, to decisions that unnecessarily increased morbidity and mortality. It is incumbent on us to understand what happened so we can be better prepared for future crises and, moreover, draw lessons for science communication more generally."
