"Funding uncertainty from the federal government and uneven commitments from state health departments have raised the specter that wastewater monitoring programs may shut down in the future."
Metabolomics approaches for immunology (review)
"First, this review compares targeted and untargeted metabolomics and reviews recent advances in metabolomics workflows, including sample preparation, raw spectra data preprocessing, metabolomics data processing, statistical analysis, and interpretation. Second, we introduce various computational tools for multiomics data integration and show how recent studies have applied metabolomics in combination with other omics approaches to immunological research. Finally, we discuss new developments in metabolomics and their potential for further research in immunology."

🧠DARPA Neurotechnology: The Deep Dive
In the last 24 years, DARPA has initiated at least 40 programs related to neurotechnology.
@MWCvitkovic and I built a resource of these programs, their managers, and papers that resulted.
“Car trips within Paris declined by almost 60 percent between 2001 and 2018…between the city and its suburbs, they have fallen by 35 percent. Car crashes have fallen by 30 percent; pollution has fallen too. A huge investment in bus corridors, tramways, and subways has caused mass transit ridership to jump by almost 40 percent in that time” (Very good article on the amazing strides Paris has made, but also the danger in a lack of strategy for wider region + suburbs) https://slate.com/business/2023/03/paris-car-ban-bikes-cycling-history-france.html

A new paper examined the vertebral column of 28 chameleon species and found morphological and functional regionalization of the presacral vertebrae with arboreal chameleons exhibiting distinct morphological shifts in vertebral traits.

'This mendelian randomization study suggests that PCSK9 is implicated in psoriasis pathogenesis, and its inhibition is associated with reduced psoriasis risk. These findings potentially pave the way for future studies that may allow personalized selection of lipid-lowering drugs for those at risk of #psoriasis.'

Some of my favorite cover illustrations by Madalena were not selected by editors - like this one for Ilana Gabanyi & @mucida's 2016 paper "Neuro-immune Interactions Drive Tissue Programming in Intestinal Macrophages"
RIP Avrion Mitchison.
"Av initiated a series of experiments that collectively provided the conceptual framework of much of today’s understanding of immune rejection, tolerance and T–B cell co-operation."

"One thing is certain: you can’t be a momfluencer without kids. Or without pushing those kids into the public eye – handing them on a digital platter to ever-ravenous spectators hankering for access. And you can’t be a momfluencer without putting your kids to work."

"Spain is to trial a new science funding programme, which will provide researchers with stable funding for four years to explore new ideas and build capacity, without being tied to specific projects. If all goes well, up to €700 million a year in supplementary funding will be available by 2033."
'In this review, we provide an overview of mouse genetic reference panels and the opportunities they provide for the study of cardiometabolic diseases and relevant traits, with particular emphasis on the Hybrid Mouse Diversity Panel (HMDP)'
'The heart-focused company says that its ALS candidate, reldesemtiv, was ineffective in a phase 3 trial compared to placebo after a second interim analysis, according to an announcement Friday. The data monitoring committee recommended that the trial be discontinued and Cytokinetics says it will stop treating people with the drug, including patients in the open-label extension. '

"The story of her leadership of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is of two huge imperatives — first, to chart a new path for the agency after Brexit forced it to leave the embrace of the European Medicines Agency, then to set the international pace in approving life-saving Covid vaccines and therapeutics."

This is very promising: Yasmine Belkaid is a great scientist and it is, to say the least, timely to recruit someone with a deep understanding of infectious disease - particularly of infectious diseases affecting disadvantaged communities - to run Pasteur.
A bit of good news for the weekend.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
