New posting! This one is about the number of unpaid hours in , an insight that's come from the realisation of how much time I'm still committing despite now (currently) being unemployed. To what extent is academic research sustained by the massive expenditure of unpaid labour? How much unpaid overtime do you think you're clocking? Let's lift the lid...

"Here, we describe a patient with selective IgA2 deficiency (CD068) with concomitant small intestinal Crohn’s disease (CD) and duodenal and ileal inflammation. To our knowledge, this is the first case of IgA2deficiency with a potential link to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This report might provide insights into potential IgA2-specific functions."

Nice to see new people registering on biologists.social. Welcome everyone!

Tips:

- Click on "local" to see all posts from all the friendly biologists who are joining this server. This may help you find people to follow as this community grows

- Consider writing a short #Introduction post (tweet) so that the rest of us can boost (retweet) it and help others discover you. Hashtags also help people find you. Here is a nice example from @steveroyle

"The strangeness has a name – it’s called entanglement – but it is still poorly understood. Why does the quantum world behave this strange way? We think we’ve solved a central piece of this puzzle."

No other country followed Thatcher’s privatisation of our water industry. You can see why. Poor services. Poor investment. High prices. Sewage dumped in our water systems. Huge payouts to executives and corporate shareholders for failure and now the prospect of UK taxpayers bailing out a failing water firm owned by China and Abu Dhabi

Oubliette Exhibition at Biblioteca Camoes, Lisbon (Largo do Calhariz, 17). Show runs until the end of June (AKA Tomorrow!).

"The Pignerol Gates. (Rome, circa 1760).
Oubliettes have only one entrance – frequently a trap door on the roof, as was by all contemporary accounts the case of the Pignerol cell. They were constructed so that men could be literally thrown away and forgotten. In Pignerol we know for certain that the gate opened once in 1631 and then again in 1670. The plates you see here were etched in 18th century Rome, by an unknown hand, working from the sketches produced by the guards (the documents were then in the Vatican’s possession, they were transferred to Napoleon by Pius VII and are now in the Archives Nationales)."

The one thing Google always did pretty well was "Search". Now, quality websites are being relegated further and further down the results page, replaced by more and more sponsored sites and YouTube links (again, delivering Ads). Of course the situation will become even worse when the presence of AI becomes fully integrated into Search. How will a small business, with a good website get noticed? Presumably the plan is for us all to pay more and more. Well sod that!

I think what may happen is that, as Google Search becomes less and less relevant, there will be a migration to fast and relevant, alternative search providers. This is already happening to some extent.

I have been using open source (auditable), non tracking search providers using the "SEARX" software for a while now. I can join a public server or even start up my own server on my computer. Already an improvement on Google without the Ads and tracking.
https://searx.github.io/searx/

I am also testing out a "paid" search option called Kagi https://kagi.com/ . For a small monthly fee (businesses have to monetise somehow) you can have your search results any way you like, ad and tracking free. Personally, I am happy to pay $5 a month to get speed, relevancy and answers to my internet searches.

Anyway, interesting times.
