'I love libraries because time and again, they have been my literal lifeline. As an abused child and as a financially insecure adult, library access to books has often kept me this side of suicidal levels of despair. The thought of anything threatening public libraries makes me ready to fight someone with my actual teeth.'

“The researchers analyzed more than 21,000 #BreastCancers in women in their 40s. Women between the ages of 40 and 49 who could self-refer for breast cancer #screening programs and receive annual #mammograms had lower breast cancer #mortality rates than those who did not, according to the peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology on Friday.” med-mastodon.com/@weldeiry/110

We support a four-year project to build a digital platform for universities in #Ukraine.

It will ensure educational continuity for students, especially for those students who had to flee the country or are internally displaced.

This week, we also selected 159 projects to improve #education systems and strengthen growth globally.

We all gain from these exchanges and cooperation with our partners across the globe.

Note that this doesn't just show that stable firing can persist indefinitely. The level of stable firing depends on the history of the inputs. It's an integrating memory with an effectively infinite time constant.

Really slow time constants are not necessarily evidence for network effects.

TikTok will face a fine over its handling of children’s data in the EU following a decision made Friday by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB).

The decision means that the Irish Data Protection Commission will be able to issue a financial penalty within a month.

The Irish regulator is the EU’s lead data protection authority in proceedings against TikTok, as the company's legal EU headquarters is based in Dublin.

Have you seen the fantastic, relatively new "advice column" in the Guardian, written by Sisonke Msimang? (The column it called "Ms Understanding").

This one is particularly good - "I am the minority voice in every aspect of my life – how do I cope with the racism?"

Her reply and advice are just - wow ❤️

'In a scattered show, the eye gravitates to the mysteriously poetic, as in a photographic series of Central American and Mexican ruins by the Argentine artist Leandro Katz. Katz retraced the travels of British artist-explorer Frederick Catherwood, who in the 19th century made exquisite drawings of ancient Mayan cities and published them for an exotica-obsessed audience back home.'

Guy de Maupassant was born #OTD in 1850. He was a protégé of Flaubert and his stories are characterized by economy of style & efficient, seemingly effortless dénouements. Many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s, describing the futility of war & the innocent civilians who are permanently changed by their experiences.

Justice Elena Kagan has voiced her support for a new Supreme Court ethics code — taking a sharply different stance than Samuel Alito.

"It just can't be that the court is the only institution that somehow is not subject to checks and balances ... We're not imperial." #SCOTUS

In one media article after another we read about how Threads and Bluesky are "decentralized social media platforms." Guess what, you are not #decentralized" if you only have one #centralized" instance server.

Can we please stop giving #Bluesky and #Threads #Meta credit for being #decentalized platforms when all they have done is announce the intention to actually someday be decentralized. Both are currently entirely #centralized corporate platforms.
