One of the things I became aware of in #COVID19 was how #wastewater #surveillance can be such a useful #publichealth tool to monitor emergence and activity of infections in the community.

'The greatest threat to our democracy comes not from demagogues like Mr. Trump or even from extremist followers like those who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 but rather from the ordinary politicians, many of them inside the Capitol that day, who protect and enable him.'

'Shaw said the apparent similarity between Attomarker and Theranos, the fraudulent US blood-testing company founded by Elizabeth Holmes, “always comes up when I’m talking to investors. The difference is we’ve got the technology to work and demonstrated it, which they never did.”

This is good news but it is *not* a triumph.
The 7 year hiatus in #Horizon funding since the #Brexit referendum (at first uncertainty, then direct lack of access to #funding) will have disrupted and dissuaded from research plans and collaborations that take years to build up.
Will take time to reverse this avoidable, self-inflicted harm.

'Under the terms of the deal, the United Kingdom will pay in €2.6 billion per year to be an ‘associate’ member of Horizon Europe for the rest of the scheme’s current term, set to end in 2027.'
'Desde muy joven, Saura mostró su interés por diferentes disciplinas artísticas. La fotografía, la pintura y la música formaban parte del calor familiar. Pero la pasión por el cine nació en la calle, cuando en el Madrid pobre y apaleado de la posguerra el pequeño se escapaba a las sesiones de los cines de barrio cercanos a su casa familiar de la avenida de Menéndez Pelayo para ver una y otra vez la versión de los años treinta de El prisionero de Zenda.'

'In some cases, GWAS results have highlighted previously underappreciated mechanisms contributing to pathogenesis. For example, genetic variants associated with AD risk are enriched in genes and enhancers (regions in the genome that control gene expression) acting in myeloid cells, likely microglia. This indicated the important role of innate immune cells in AD. Therefore, the enrichment of risk variants in specific biological pathways can deepen our mechanistic understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and may even point to new therapeutic targets.'

“Your notion that different standards of justice should apply to a select group of people is offensive. Here is another reality you must face: Those who wish to avoid felony charges in Fulton County, Georgia — including violations of Georgia RICO law — should not commit felonies in Fulton County, Georgia.”

'Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, chief executive of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, which has the majority of voting rights in the company, described executives asking: “Why would we do such a trial with a high risk of maybe not showing anything? Maybe it’s just the anti-diabetic effect that is responsible for the benefits we’ve seen in diabetes. What if we don’t see anything in obesity, and the trial costs hundreds of millions of dollars?”
