To celebrate the beauty of #DevBio and the creativity of developmental biologists, we’ve joined forces with @the_node to set up a virtual art exhibition
We launch today to coincide with the start of #EDBC2023
Some highlights below...

"Melaku Worede was at the heart of efforts to secure Ethiopia’s heritage of crop diversity — and in ensuring that farmers benefited. From 1979 to 1993, he led one of the premier crop gene banks in the world, the Plant Genetic Resources Center in Addis Ababa (now the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute). It was a time when uniform monocultures of crops such as maize (corn; Zea mays), wheat (Triticum aestivum) and barley (Hordeum vulgare) were being widely planted. Melaku was passionate about saving the diversity of traditional crops before they were lost. The practices that Melaku developed, which he referred to as ‘conservation through use’, are now applied around the world."

'LPS induced a sustained increase in IFNγ levels and unresolvable inflammatory lung injury in the mice lacking RGS2 but not in RGS2 null chimeric mice receiving WT bone marrow or receiving the RGS2 gene in alveolar #macrophage.'
Good news. Looking forward to being able to read and vote on the proposed deal. Hope that they now can close an acceptable deal with SAG-AFTRA.
Get 'em while they're hot
“O livro vai vender muito mais graças à lamentável intervenção deste grupo de extrema-direita. Vendo isto numa perspetiva que não é comercial: o livro vai ser lido por muitas mais crianças."

"Here, we describe simple 10 rules (Table 1) that scientists, lab and department heads, scientific institutions, and funding agencies can adopt to curb the abandonment of academic careers by women because of the career penalties associated with motherhood and consequently increase the representation of women in Academia."

@Ruth_Mottram Not in Denmark, but here are two excellent scientific illustrators
Is there a scientific illustrator on here who could do a reasonably easy piece of work quite quickly (within the next 2 weeks or so say) for an article I'm writing?
Or can anyone recommend somebody? Ideally Denmark based (for financial simplicity), but elsewhere not impossible...

@albertcardona I often look for theses when I'm preparing an interview, there's a lot of great stuff that doesn't make it into the paper, there's often a well written intro with a more personal point of view - and the acknowledgements are often great for a human interest angle
"Actually, we will read your thesis" by Neel Krishnaswami https://semantic-domain.blogspot.com/2023/09/actually-we-will-read-your-thesis.html
"whenever I find a paper I don't understand, I start looking for the PhD thesis based on it. Nine times out of ten, the thesis is vastly more understandable: "obvious" lemmas will have explicit proofs, algorithms will have detailed pseudocode, and the right intuitions and perspectives to take about the topic will be spelled out."
Can relate. A colleague of mine, Stefan Pulver, once mentioned to me the "strategic reserve of Michael Bate's lab PhD student theses" as something of wonder – he was a postdoc in that lab. Huge amounts of data not deemed splashy enough for publication but full of details and caveats and protocols for studies of #Drosophila larvae #neuroscience.
While the climate is telling us to move much faster in the fight against global warming, some political leaders want to slow down. The UK🇬🇧 public support #NetZero as an aspiration. But support drops to 16% if transition involves increasing household bills https://www.ft.com/content/b9912ffe-08dd-4653-863c-21885d727d20
