My colleague Sian Ede & I set up a project with Rob at the IGC years ago. You couldn't ask for a better resident artist at a science institute, curious, kind, and very talented.

"Data visualizations tell stories. Relatively subtle choices, such as the range of the axes in a bar chart or line graph, can have a big impact on the story that a figure tells. Ask yourself whether a graph has been designed to tell a story that accurately reflects the underlying data, or whether it has been designed to tell a story more closely aligned with what the designer would like you to believe."

Noted #socialist agitator #AdamSmith once wrote, "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the publick, or in some contrivance to raise prices."

The lung mycobiome & anti-tumor immunity
"Our study revealed that the intratumor mycobiome, albeit at low biomass, plays an important role in stimulating the immunosuppressive TME and thereby promotes lung tumor progression and is associated with poor patient outcome."

"I had worked on mitochondrial DNA in vertebrate cells and in yeast. I became fascinated by the unusual mitochondrial DNA of trypanosomatids, which is a very large network of catenated circles (1). Then, on the side, I discovered this organelle, the glycosome, which contains the whole glycolytic system of the trypanosomatids (4). I still remember the excitement when we found that."

"Until the age of seventy, nothing I drew was worthy of notice. At seventy-three years, I was somewhat able to fathom the growth of plants and trees, and the structure of birds, animals, insects and fish."

@failedLyndonLaRouchite Thanks!
This painting is from A. M. Wirth. What is imagined in the painting is a streetselling scene in a nineteenth century urban context. The painting is called "Beim Antiquar", and so you are looking at a second hand trade of an antiquarian. The nineteenth century saw the rise of this trade of used and old books, as #BookHistory knows. But there is a lot of paper present too, so #PaperHistory folks pay attention if you like. Highlighted are the details I am going to address in more length.

@cyrilpedia Great book, and great teaching module. Every university should teach this.

Here is a new thread for friends of #PaperHistory, #BookHistory, and the #histodons community.
@histodons
On the painting with the title "The Alchemist" from the Flemish Mattheus van Helmont, circa mid seventeenth century, are many uses and abuses of #earlymodern paper products reflected in the details. I will address 7 of these paper issues in the thread. Bonus for #Alchemy friends: a large écorché figure, a distillation apparatus over a fire, and metal working assistants.
Enjoy.

How a #BigPharma Company Stalled a Potentially Lifesaving #Vaccine in Pursuit of Bigger Profits

A vaccine against #tuberculosis, the world’s deadliest infectious disease, has never been closer to reality, with the potential to save millions of lives.
But its development slowed after its corporate owner #GSK focused on more profitable vaccines.
The past, present and future of science publishing.
Long read from me giving the history (not always told well), details of how journals actually work (useful for young scientists and to clarify for old hands), and discussion of how the future could look in a post-preprint world (spoiler: academia could get this wrong).
