"In this study, we found that osteosarcoma cells acquired healthy mitochondria from platelets, which subsequently weakened their proliferation ability but enhanced their tendency to metastasize by altering their energy metabolism."

"Like most medical researchers, Dr. Pattillo had known about the HeLa cells since he was a graduate student. As it happened, he had also been a fellow in the Johns Hopkins lab in Baltimore that had first cultured them, one of the few Black doctors working there in the late 1960s.
But unlike many other scientists, Dr. Pattillo was keenly focused on the fact that there was a human being behind those cells, and that she had left a family behind. For years he had wanted to honor her contributions to science."

"In recommendation letters, women and URM students are more likely to be described with personal attribute descriptors and communal adjectives rather than competencies [7,8]. For example, women are more likely to be described as having ‘compassion’ and ‘enthusiasm’. By contrast, men are more likely to be described as ‘exceptional’ or ‘outstanding’ [9]."

I cant believe I missed this just because I was, well, zero years old at the time

Thanks to Miguel Godinho Ferreira & Karina Xavier for the invitation to teach in the "From Cells to Organisms" module in the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia PhD program.

Here's a classic reading recommendation for anyone interested in the topic who's looking for a starting point.

“The fact is, we’re not really ready,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development. “Our local health departments are very spotty with their ability to do mosquito control and to even try to diagnose these viruses and mosquitoes.”

"Drought in Spain, the world’s largest olive oil producer, has devastated recent harvests, and bad weather has hit olive crops in other major growers like Italy, Greece and Portugal. The United States imports almost all of the olive oil it consumes, primarily from Spain and Italy."

"Strategies to reduce the probability of spillover events are under-prioritized and underutilized, as highlighted by recent infectious disease crises such as Ebola and Mpox epidemics, and have been lost in overall preparedness discussions and recovery financing. This “more of the same” focus suggests that it is politically more expedient to allocate financial resources to deal with a problem once it has arisen, rather than taking the steps necessary to reduce the risk of it occurring in the first place."

“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.”

The International Meridian Conference designates the Royal Observatory, Greenwich as the world's prime meridian #OTD in 1884.

The main issue at the conference was France's insistence that the meridian should have a strictly neutral character in the same way that they maintained that the metre was a neutral measure. Most European countries aligned their clocks with Greenwich within ten years, Sweden and North America already having done so, and the trend continued. via @wikipedia
