"When We Cease to Understand the World" was one of my favorite books of the last 5 years, so I have high hopes for Labatut's latest novel.
Q: You prepared to do this piece by taking a course online on linear algebra?
A: I did.

"Tal vez su mayor contribución a la guerra no estuvo en las trincheras, sino en el legado de su testimonio. Una investigación ha calculado que los 2.300 combatientes británicos que lucharon en la guerra de España escribieron y publicaron, entre todos ellos, 730 obras literarias, en su mayoría diarios de guerra."

Francis Bacon. 2nd Version of Triptych, 1944, 1988.
"'Part man, part beast, these howling creatures first appeared in Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, which Bacon painted during the Second World War. One critic described that picture as a reflection of ‘the atrocious world into which we have survived’. Bacon identified his distorted figures with the vengeful Greek Furies, while the title places them in the Christian context of the crucifixion.'"

Protesters blockaded the world’s largest coal port for 30 hours over the failure of government to act on climate change, preventing more than half a million tonnes of coal from leaving the port of Newcastle.
“Pancakes were being made, tea drunk, #dolphins swam nearby and people watched the sunset and sunrise. Those involved say it was a magical experience.”
- Rising Tide local organiser Alexa Stuart
Protesters spent the night on the water, rostered in two-hour shifts.

A scandal of the century is the energy-industrial complex taking over the G.O.P. - the Gas and Oil Party.

"We demonstrated that a DSB located upstream of CAG repeats induces polymerase theta-mediated end joining, resulting in deletion of the entire CAG tract."
'As of 2022, no journal published in Latin America appears in lists of the world’s publications with the highest impact factors; these journals are more vulnerable to economic conditions, and even closure. Spending years of work on research only to publish in a journal that will “die quickly” because it has no readership, Artaxo said, is a “waste of time, money, and everything.”

Periodic reminder of what fMRI's BOLD signal is measuring, and its temporal dynamics:
"blood oxygenation level–dependent (BOLD) contrast. [...] increased signal in a voxel measured with an EPI [echo planar imaging] sequence indicates recent neuronal activity
because of the relative increase in local blood oxygenation that accompanies such activity. The temporal profile of this BOLD response, known as the hemodynamic response function, looks like a bell curve with a long tail, peaking around 4 to 5 seconds after local neural activity and returning to baseline after 12 to 15 seconds."
From "Principles of Neural Science", Kandel et al. 6th edition, page 115.
No matter how fast the EPI imaging is (~100 ms), the BOLD dynamics makes GCaMP look lighting fast. Temporally deconvolving BOLD is possible, to a point, but remember its spatial resolution is measured in millimetres, whereas neuronal somas measure ~0.025 millimetres.

“Colograph
The works presented here are created with alternative materials rather than etched on copper. From squashed paper costumes to packaging and leather book covers, objects are inked with different processes, both intaglio and planographic. Scales vary and are usually life-size. The paper costume prints are mostly made from real costumes (with the exception of the long dress, which is a smaller scale model) , worn by actors in a film project and subsequently smashed, inked and printed on cotton paper.”

It's difficult to explain how great the original Netflix DVD service was - how much better than instantly streaming Vin Diesel it was to be able to get in a day or two anything from the Criterion Collection, for example.

"Interestingly, residual Omenn Syndrome lymphocytes display characteristics proper of embryonic lymphocytes that emerge before, and independently from, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). This prompted us to hypothesize whether Omenn Syndrome autoreactive T-cells are generated in the embryo independently from HSCs."

"Led by German expert Stefanie Haustein, a group of scientists has now calculated the turnover of the “oligopoly” that controls this new market. Using mainly public funds, the scientific community paid the five large publishers $1.06 billion in four years. And according to this estimate, the sum covers only the fees to publish open access studies."
"A liberdade de Milei é a liberdade de ser deixado ao abandono se formos pobres e a liberdade de não ajudar ninguém se formos ricos. Não tem nada a ver com a libertação da fome, da pobreza, da dominação e da ignorância que constitui desde a Antiguidade o cerne mais profundo da ideia e da filosofia da liberdade."
"These draft pages make it possible to see in detail how Darwin originally composed and revised many of his arguments and expressions. The drafts also contain many sentences that were never published, offering fascinating insights into Darwin's thinking as he composed the book that quite literally changed the world."

'What went wrong? It isn’t that the past 25 years of consciousness studies haven’t been productive. The field has been incredibly rich, with discoveries and applications that seem one step from science fiction. The problem is that, even with all these discoveries, we still haven’t identified any neural correlates of consciousness. That’s why Koch lost the bet.'
