Maria Cunitz (1610 – 22 August 1664) was an Silesian astronomer, and the most notable female astronomer of the early modern era. She authored a book "Urania propitia", in which she provided new tables, new ephemera, and a simpler working solution to Kepler's second law for determining the position of a planet on its elliptical path. The Cunitz crater on Venus is named after her. The minor planet 12624 Mariacunitia is named in her honour. via @wikipedia
"Here, we investigated how eosinophils adapt to the small intestine (SI) microenvironment and the local signals that regulate this process. We observed that eosinophils gradually migrate along the crypt–villus axis, giving rise to a villus-resident subpopulation with a distinct transcriptional signature. Retinoic acid signaling was specifically required for maintenance of this subpopulation, while IL-5 was largely dispensable outside of its canonical role in eosinophil production."

'This raises intriguing questions: Do plants age? How do they escape the typical trajectory of senescence, and what factors contribute to their remarkable longevity? What limits their lifespan? How are these unique characteristics intertwined with plant life strategies and evolutionary pathways?'

"While severe neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) caused by penetrant de novo mutations approximate Mendelian models of causality, Mendelian causal logic has been seen as inapplicable to common mental disorders for decades. I sometimes think that it is criminal that Mendel is taught in school without even a whiff of quantitative genetics to balance it."

Scenes from the meritocracy:
'He started by editing college essays from his Yale dorm room for $50 an hour but now charges the parents of his company’s 190 clients — mostly private-school kids, many of them in New York — $120,000 a year to help them create a narrative he believes will appeal to college-admissions officers. That company, Command Education, currently has 41 full-time staffers, most of whom are recent graduates of top-tier colleges and universities. The pitch is crafted to appeal to the wealthy clients Rim courts: a “personalized, white glove” service, through which Command employees do everything from curating students’ extracurriculars to helping them land summer internships, craft essays, and manage their course loads with the single goal of getting them in.'
@christlet Are you kidding? Maybe it should be played at half speed to make it last longer! :) Looking forward to to listening to this while I cook
Have you ever thought “My life is 1:21:32 too long and I'd love to listen to @christlet pontificating on microscopy, neurons and science”? Say no more! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikZKI8NN-wmpg5-Mo-6Ph8ikvdPvKKYb

"La inteligencia artificial es el síntoma, no la causa. Nadie cambia periodistas por modelos de IA para mejorar el producto, sólo para “optimizar” la producción. Esa es la ideología que sedujo a la prensa hace 20 años y que nos ha traído hasta este momento. El día que contrataron su primer optimizador de buscadores (SEO, por sus siglas en inglés), los medios empezaron a trabajar para Google, en lugar de escribir para el lector."

#OTD in 1845. "The Raven" is published in The Evening Mirror in New York, the 1st publication with the name of the author, Edgar Allan Poe.
Its publication made Poe popular in his lifetime, although it did not bring him much financial success. The poem was soon reprinted, parodied, & illustrated. Critical opinion is divided as to the poem's literary status, but it nevertheless remains one of the most famous poems ever written.

In China there is a folktale about a husband who learns of his wife’s infidelity from a magpie. He gave his wife a mirror which could turn into a magpie to tell the man what she had been up to. Consequently mirrors often had the design of a magpie on their back.

'Here, we observed notable differences in intestinal tissue structure between naked mole-rats and mice, especially in the ileum. This was characterised by thicker muscularis and submucosa layers, longer villi and larger crypts. In measuring gut permeability, naked mole-rats showed reduced permeability compared to mice, especially in the small intestine (ileum)'
