How does the microbiome shape host physiology?
New study provides evidence that certain groups within the fly microbiome have critical functions for host development.

Antibody-mediated protein degradation is a cool method to eliminate proteins that e.g. behave badly in disease. This new method PACTAC uses PCSK9-antibody fusions to target receptors for lysosomal degradation.

not for the first time I've been part of a team doing the southern-most direct ocean observations on the planet... we have just emerged from the Bay of Whales (yes there were #whales). Its where #Amundsen took #Fram and set up base for his successful round trip to the pole. It was also mind-meltingly spectacular. We got to around 78o 40'S and took a temperature-salinity profile. Why wouldn't you do all you can to preserve this planet?

"Despite the aforementioned advancements, our understanding of the protein structures of de novo genes remains very limited. It is still unclear whether de novo genes are capable of being well-folded, how frequently they are well-folded, and if they possess novel structural folds."

Biological rhythms have been broadly ignored in #ecotoxicology.
@michaelgbertram &co highlight the importance of biological rhythms for understanding, predicting, and mitigating the complex ecological repercussions of chemical #pollution.
Irving Langmuir American physical chemist who was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was born #OTD in 1881.
Besides surface chemistry, his scientific research, spanning more than 50 years, included chemical reactions, thermal effects, and electrical discharges in gases; atomic structure; surface phenomena in a vacuum; and atmospheric science.
'How could one come to know the motions of wit? Here Cavendish left off her quarrel with Hobbes and turned to the “Modern Microscopical or Dioptrical Writers”—Descartes, Hooke, Boyle—whose splendid and costly instruments, she insisted, had deceived them as to the true nature of motion. In her 1666 treatise, “Observations upon Experimental Philosophy,” she complained that the lenses of microscopes were fractured, flawed, and unevenly shaped, and that their mirrors produced distorted figures, like “a high heel to a short legg.” Lice appeared as large as lobsters, while the wings of birds were abnormally stretched, their feathers streaked with garish colors. “How shall a feather inform us of the interior nature of a Bird?” she wondered.'

"I fairly often encounter people who believe that Europe suffers from mass unemployment and has lagged far behind the United States technologically. But this view is decades out of date. At this point adults in their prime working years are actually somewhat more likely to be employed in major European nations than in America. Europeans also know all about information technology, and productivity — gross domestic product per hour worked — is virtually the same in Europe as it is here."

As digital media took off in the 2010s, few believed magazines could survive. While the industry isn’t what is once was, magazines are still very much alive, but why?

@noyes The tradeoff would be in the lack of addiction. But we'll have to wait to see what the published data actually shows.
'The technology may transform agriculture in LMICs beyond the genomic level: local farmers seem happy, Runo told the journal Nature, to source seeds from regional researchers rather than multinationals. The global spread of gene-editing technology may end up dispersing the commercial power currently concentrated in corporate labs — and raises the prospect of African-grown gene-edited crops being sold beyond the continent.'
