"Black renters face a disproportionate share of evictions. Less than one in every five renters in America is Black (18.8%), but over half of all eviction filings are against Black renters (51.1%)."

While it is now illegal not to rent to someone based on race, it is widely acceptable to discriminate based on past evictions--who are disproportionately Black women.

Securing fair housing for all is essential for social justice.

Animal of the day (141)

This tiny disco ball with a face is called a Hummingbird Bobtail Squid, and it doesn't get bigger than a couple of inches in length. Widespread throughout the tropical waters of the central Indo-Pacific area, it prefers sandy or fine sediment seafloors where it can easily bury itself in case of danger. It rests under the sand during the day and comes out at night to feed on small benthic crustaceans primarily. Its glowing abilities, which help hide its profile from being silhouetted by the moonlight, come from a bioluminescent bacteria with which it shares a symbiotic relationship.

Satire is officially dead. It has to be noted that both senators and members of congress are allowed to trade stocks — many of them criticize foreign social media and push for antitrust legislation against them simply to better their portfolio made up of American big tech companies.

Tom Gauld, spot on as usual. It's like when people ask me to recommend them cameras "that take good #photos" 🤷‍♂️

"The most interesting debate about leadership, then, is between those (like Machiavelli) who believe that leaders make (and overcome) history, and those (like Marx, and like the author of King David’s story) who believe that history makes (and constrains) leaders."

Ceci n'est pas un spreadsheet.

"A restaurant would not serve you a photo of the meal you ordered. If you have a spreadsheet, why would you save it as an image file? Not being able to copy and paste data or to clearly read it decreases the possibility of curation. Again, this can be solved simply by paying attention to proper formatting."

Most Top News Sites Block AI Bots. Right-Wing Media Welcomes Them

over 88 percent of top-ranked news outlets in the US now block web crawlers used by artificial intelligence

One sector of the news business is a glaring outlier, though: Right-wing media lags far behind their liberal counterparts when it comes to bot-blocking.

'Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria had whisked Dürer’s panel off to his private collection in Munich in 1614, just over a century after it was completed, arranging with the Dominicans for a copy to replace it. This copy is now in the Historisches Museum in Frankfurt, and although it lacks Dürer’s skilled brushwork and glorious colors, it allows us to see his design and in particular one daring, even shocking, detail. Just to the left of center Dürer painted his own portrait: an isolated figure in a recognizably German landscape, poised between the apostles looking up in awe and the Madonna floating above. He holds a board with “credits larger than a shop sign” declaring that he, Albrecht Dürer, had created this picture, ending with a large version of his monogram, “AD.”'
