@WhatisBiotechnology 30 years ago today. A variant of this photograph of Howard Temin at his microscope has been hanging in my office for nearly that long. He was my thesis advisor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the mid-80s.

On this day in 1994 Howard Temin died, won 1975 Nobel Prize for work on tumour viruses #NobelPrize #ThisDayInBiotech

Caveat emptor.

"If the reagents used for building libraries themselves (or those used for amplifying and confirming the clones following screening experiments) inadvertently contain cross-contaminated oligos, it will make the situation more complex.
We realized this possibility recently, as we observed some unexpected results (presence of unrelated sequences) when setting up a CRISPR library screening, which prompted us to investigate the issue further. Our systematic analyses of various reagents, research equipment, and multiple vendor-supplied oligos suggested that commercially synthesized oligos are the source for such cross-contaminants."

"Compared with multivalent viral vaccines, we envision that a single protein-based antigen that protects against all three orthoebolavirus species that have caused previous outbreaks represents a more attractive alternative, which would be easier to manufacture and store than viral vaccines and could enable widespread vaccination strategies beyond ring vaccination."

"One of the movie’s nice surprises is that Morricone turns out to be a total charmer, a low-key showman with a demure gaze that he works like a vamp and an impish smile that routinely punctuates one of his anecdotes."

Labour is claiming that £28 billion of investment in climate change a year is not possible. But that’s not true. That’s Starmer’s choice. taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024/0. All the money and much more that Labour needs to spend on climate change is readily available to it. In this post, I show how in some detail. In that case, Labour's claim of unaffordability and the situation having changed does not stack. It's Starmer's choice not to do this.
