One of the embryo model studies I wrote about the other day is officially published in Nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06368-y And one that I didn't write about is also published there: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06354-4 So that's 5 embryo models, w/more to come...

New TG mouse model for #SARSCoV2 infection
"In this study, we report an inducible, transgenic hACE2 mouse line and showcase three examples for specifically expressing hACE2 in three different lung epithelial cells, including AT2 cells, club cells, and ciliated cells. Moreover, all these mice models develop severe pneumonia after SARS-CoV-2 infection."
'The first popular English-language science books came to India in the mid-20th century. Even today, a majority of popular science books in Indian bookstores or online marketplaces are in English and written by foreign authors. The lack of Indian stories and perspectives is stark. While bestsellers in politics, cultural fiction, entertainment, and sports dominate the Indian market and have won prestigious international awards, compelling literature on Indian science and scientists is rare. It also likely accounts for the limited penetration of any popular book on science.'
“Equity in science is not a political issue; it’s good science.” The authors caution that in order to move equity to the center of scientific research, “we must first recognize and acknowledge whom our scientific and institutional processes harm and how,” noting that acknowledging this harm “is the first step” towards positive change.'
One of the many reasons actual doctors and scientists shouldn't debate RFK Jr: because he constantly lies about everything, even simple indisputable facts.
He claims comparative studies aren't done on vaccines.
Yes, they are. Here's one showing the efficacy of the COVID vaccine, and one showing autism is *less* common in kids who received the MMR vaccine.
His whole shtick relies on repeating lies until the audience starts thinking they might be true. No use in helping him.
They were here indeed .
A great week teaching MD PhD students of the multi-institutional EMERALD MD PhD program for the second year, this time at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia in Lisbon (last year at Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) Barcelona). Thanks to David Brena, PhD, Damjana Kastelic, Luis Moita, Gabriel G. Martins, Tiago Paixao & Ricardo Leite for making it all happen.
The first part was a one day workshop on modern scientific publication that David del Álamo and I designed. The rest was discussing the interplay of basic science and medical progress with a wonderful group of students.
"Despite this lower baseline phosphosignature, CD14+ monocytes and CD1c+ DCs from both patients and healthy donors showed very similar activation in response to atherosclerotic plasma. However, when exposed to healthy plasma, only immune cells from patients were activated, suggesting they have an intrinsic inflammatory capacity in response to the same stimulus."

This preprint from Groza et al. (Helge Ewers lab) looks really interesting. Exploring how particles (such as virions) gain entry to cells. Really neat application of synthetic tools to show that overcoming energy for membrane deformation is the key step to endocytosis.

“It’s not surprising the WSJ is disinclined to entertain the real lesson of the story: that confident idiots who think regulation is for cowards can end up getting themselves killed, and taking innocent people with them.” # https://www.currentaffairs.org/2023/06/the-perils-of-innovator-mindset/?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon
