“We’re spending over US$4 trillion a year on health-care costs, but only about 4–5% of that is spent on preventing disease.”
An obvious observation for decades, at all levels of society. But understated by monetary values. Drop in US life-expectancy & increased inequality & mortality should also be stressed. ⬆️ CDC funding alone will not solve this. Preventative health requires changes at all levels of society.
I've been here for 10 days, so it's time for an #introduction :
I am professor of political theory and public policy at JGU Mainz.
I am interested in theories of #democracy #deliberation and #representation. I also study citizens' conceptions of democracy and process preferences.
So far, I have mostly used social media for alerts to new publications and to follow UK government crises.
But I quite like it here, so I might write a little more myself.

From 1940s-1980, the wealthiest paid 70-94% marginal tax rates. Zero of them went broke from taxation. Zero of them left the USA. All remained exceedingly wealthy, manufacturing boomed, AND we had the strongest middle class growth in US History.
Let's do that again. #TaxTheRich
Holy sh*T
"Britain’s biggest police force gathered sensitive data about people using its website to report sexual offences, domestic abuse and other crimes and shared it with Facebook for targeted advertising, the Observer has found."
'Amid record-shattering warmth this February, BP scaled back an earlier goal of lowering its emissions by 35% by 2030, saying it will aim for a 20 to 30% cut instead. ExxonMobil quietly withdrew funding for a heavily publicized effort to use algae to create low-carbon fuel. And Shell announced that it would not increase its investments in renewable energy this year, despite earlier promises to dramatically slash its emissions.'

'The UKHSA said that, besides young children, “susceptibility to measles is particularly high among 19- to 25-year-olds, affected by unfounded stories in the early 2000s” that MMR caused autism. It said these “Wakefield cohorts” of unvaccinated young adults — named after Andrew Wakefield, who promoted the now discredited idea that MMR jabs had unacceptable side-effects — would be most vulnerable in a large outbreak.'

'Desde 2017, quando foi criado o programa de estímulo ao emprego científico, só 7,5% dos novos contratos no sistema científico português, num universo de 9646, não eram precários. A grande maioria dos trabalhadores da ciência continua com contratos a prazo, geralmente com um vínculo nunca superior a seis anos, ou seja, em situação precária'

This study strengthens caution of quickly extrapolating animal model studies to humans, and vice versa.
“…the assessment of human–animal relationships is important for translational studies. We believe that our data will also help to identify which species should be used in specific settings or as an animal model.” #physiology #animalmodels #Proteomics #biology #translationalscience
Smoke from Canadian #wildfires is once again wafting into parts of the U.S. There are currently 616 wildfires in Canada, 231of which are uncontrolled. “Canada is at national preparedness level 5, indicating full commitment of national resources is ongoing, demand for resources is extreme, & international resources are being mobilized.”
This article from early July does a good job of explaining why many fires are just allowed to burn.

'After Tori Bowie, an elite athlete, died in May, the reality of the health risk to Black women posed by childbirth was once again in the spotlight. The maternal mortality rate for Black women in America is, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2.6 times that for white women.'
