"As a research community, we must crack the myth of a single career trajectory from masters to PhDs to post-docs to tenured faculty. That’s merely one path in the maze of the scientific landscape"
@emtiyaz Thanks for sharing that, I don't have a lot of first hand input, other than from people who passed by briefly.
My friend Scott Wesley Long and his team at Houston Methodist today identified the first case of BA.2.86 in Texas, only the 4th so far in the US! It’s spreading slowly (other lineages still dominant) but it’s spreading. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/swesleylong_houston-is-in-a-summer-covid-wave-what-to-activity-7103071664933933056-KS4a?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios

'From their first appearance in the U.S., the syringe tides were a ready-made tabloid sensation, and a shocking visualization of the perils of a throwaway society. In the years that followed, major efforts would be taken to reduce Americans’ solid-waste production and protect its shores. But the steel-and-plastic flotsam raised a more specific warning, too, about the increasing and deliberate wastefulness of the American health-care system. That concern went unheeded at the time.'

Tardigrades have survived every mass extinction on Earth since they evolved about a 1/2 billion years ago. There are ~1,300 known species.
And millions of years from now, they won’t even notice we’re gone.

Biochemical analysis revealed that Lft1 and Laa2 bind to Laa1 via the same interface. Following a suggestion by a colleague to try Alphafold2, we found that the two likely bind via a common mechanism, although the Lft1 interface is a little larger—something confirmed by our biochemical results.
So, what does this new Lft1-Laa1 complex do? Frankly, it’s still a mystery. However, if you dig into the literature, especially proteomics and high-throughput data, it looks like HEATR5 proteins are involved in non-AP1 pathways in other organisms,

Finally, we know that HEATR5B in humans is mutated in a rare human disorder that causes pontocerebellar hypoplasia. Whether this is due to effects on AP1 or other pathways is unclear.

Encouragingly, AT-1501 promoted survival and function of islet and kidney allografts in cynomolgus and rhesus macaques, respectively, without evidence of thromboembolism.'
