'The UK National Health Service was an early funder of Cochrane and its UK-based groups. Later, the NIHR provided support, mainly paying for support staff to help produce reviews.
So when the NIHR confirmed in August 2021 that it would stop funding all the UK-based review groups, the news came as a shock'
'In the study, three participants received autologous OTQ923 after myeloablative conditioning and were followed for 6 to 18 months. At the end of the follow-up period, all the participants had engraftment and stable induction of fetal hemoglobin'

I just learned about the COOLEST program! It's called "Letters to a Pre-Scientist" and if you sign up, you volunteer to be a pen pal to a kid and help them get excited for a career in a #STEM field! It sounds like a wonderful opportunity for #ScienceMastodon to do some good in the world. The program is open to anyone in STEM over 18, all around the world. Please share this post, they need more volunteers!

September 4, 1795, birthday of geologist Friedrich August von Alberti.
In 1834 he named the Triassic System after three geological formations - the Buntsandstein (Red Sandstone deposited on dry land), the Muschelkalk (fossiliferous limestone deposited in a shallow sea) and Keuper (Black Shale of the deep sea) - he studied.
Even if those formations are found only in Germany, the name is still used for the Trias or Triassic Period (251,9-201,4 million years) today.

The costs of being a non-native English speaker in science
"To date, the task of overcoming language barriers has largely been left to non-native English speakers’ efforts and their investment in ways of improving their English skills. However, the magnitude of the disadvantage, quantified in this study, seems far beyond the level that can be overcome with individuals’ efforts. We urgently need a concerted effort..."
We can all think about this, how we can help.

'In 1961, at the National Congress on Medical Quackery, the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare pointed out that, along with actual snake oils and other nostrums, bottled seawater was being sold for up to twenty dollars a gallon as a “panacea for virtually all human ailments.”

Update. "Despite English being the lingua franca of science, getting an excellent level of English is a privilege of few, restricted to high-income countries or those who can pay for intense language training in Global South countries. Yet, most of the hiring calls from Global North research institutes urging inclusion conflate being a good scientist with being good (or excellent) at English. This isn’t true."

'Countering the theory that glioblastoma–synaptic integration may result in physiologically disorganized neural responses, we found task-relevant neural activity within the entire region of the tumour-infiltrated cortex, including cortical regions that are not typically implicated in speech production (Fig. 1b)—a notable finding that indicates tumour-induced functional remodelling of language circuitry. '
Looking forward to our workshop 'Frontiers of Neuromorphic Computing' that will start tomorrow morning at the @MPI_ScienceOfLight Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light.
We are trying to record at least most of the talks and release them later (with some delay) on video.
'The majority (68%) of the candidates are being developed independently or collaboratively by private companies/industry, while 25% are being developed by academic or other non-profit organizations (Fig. 2b). Notably, candidates against HIV and malaria are being developed mostly by academic or other non-profit organizations.'

Synaptic mechanisms for associative learning in the cerebellar nuclei https://biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.10.28.514163v2
These findings raise the intriguing possibility that plasticity within the cerebellar nuclei (and not just the cortex!) has the capacity to support well-timed sensorimotor learning.

'Here I call attention to evolutionary addiction, whereby a host trait evolves a need for microbes without having been improved by them. Evolutionary addiction should be considered when interpreting microbe-removal experiments, as it is a distinct and potentially common process. Further, it may have unique implications for the evolution and stability of host–microbe interactions.'

'Es una elefanta —abierta de patas— en una habitación. Es una presencia real y, a la vez, un enigma de primer orden. Creemos pertenecer a una sociedad amante del conocimiento, pero no fue hasta el 1 de junio de 1998 —¡1998!— que conocimos la anatomía completa del clítoris, cuando la doctora australiana Helen O’Connell lo publicó en la revista estadounidense The Journal of Urology.'
