"My cohort was the most diverse in the history of my program, yet many faculty members weren’t used to being around people from various backgrounds. I received many comments questioning my place in the program, my future in science given that no one in my family has a PhD, and my legal status in the country."
Oh look, Leonard Leo and Ginny Thomas reportedly were leveraging Citizens United even before the decision came out to build a network of dark money group to lobby the Courts in support of right wing movement and getting richer. Yet another story on courts and right wing cesspool of corruption. #uspol https://www.politico.com/news/2023/09/10/ginni-thomas-leonard-leo-citizens-united-00108082

Musk's aid to Russia via Starlink has cost lives in Ukraine and will cost more in Africa.
“Starlink was not meant to be involved in wars,” Musk told Isaacson. “It was so people can watch Netflix and chill and get online for school and do good peaceful things, not drone strikes.”

Curious to hear your thoughts as well. Is the whole thing largely overblown? (My take). But/and once we set aside the obvious, what interesting questions remain? Top down causation? Insight into what is going wrong? Something else entirely?

The Dutch government spends some €37.5 billion ($40.5 billion) every year in subsidies to industries that use fossil fuels.
The fossil fuel industry has politicians and police on their side. That’s what needs to change.

@futurebird This transformation of libraries is happening at public schools in Houston. The state has taken over HISD schools. Of course, the targeted schools have students who are predominantly Hispanic and African American. All in the name of "reform."
This transformation going on elsewhere as well?

@gpollara @academicchatter Another administrative burden on PIs. Many are leaving academia bc of such burdens that reduce their time dedicated to doing actual science.
Wow, this seems a very draconian and impractical stance for #NIH to take for its grants involving foreign partners! 👇
Article below haa a full takedown. #academicchatter #funding @academicchatter
"Beginning October 1, 2023, foreign subaward recipients will be required to provide the U.S. prime grantee “copies of all lab notebooks, all data and all documentation that support the research outcomes…no less than every six months, or more frequently based on risks”"
I just learned that libraries cannot purchase #Audible exclusives and I feel absolutely enraged. Then I found Libro.fm thanks to @pluralistic and I learned their #books are #DRM free, yours forever and a local bookstore of your choice receives part of your subscription or purchase. I tried their app and it is nicer, prettier and more user friendly than Audible, so I subscribed and picked #TheInternetCon to help seize the means of Computation ✊
