“Na escola, tinham-me ensinado que na Revolução não tinha sido disparado nenhum tiro, até que em Novembro de 2021 li o livro Esquecidos em Abril, os Mortos da Revolução (sem) Sangue, do jornalista Fábio Monteiro, que relata a história dos que morreram”, diz, ao PÚBLICO, o realizador. Não foi apenas junto à sede da PIDE que houve tiroteio.'
“Orchids have interested me as much as almost anything in my life,” Darwin wrote. In their forms, he saw a vast landscape of the forces of selective evolution, a dance they played with their environment and their pollinators. “My little darlings,” as he sometimes referred to orchids, became his model for further exploring the forces he so broadly described in The Origin of Species. Just three years after the publication of that shattering work, he had produced his tome puzzling over the multitudinous, striking habits of orchids: On the Various Contrivances by Which British and Foreign Orchids Are Fertilised by Insects, and On the Good Effects of Intercrossing.'

Karl Waldemar Ziegler, a German chemist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963, with Giulio Natta, for work on polymers was born #OTD in 1898.
He is also known for his work involving free-radicals, many-membered rings, and organometallic compounds, as well as the development of Ziegler–Natta catalyst. One of many awards Ziegler received was the Werner von Siemens Ring for expanding the scientific knowledge of & the technical development of new synthetic materials.
'Bayer’s chief executive has blamed an “old chemistry mindset” and a chronic lack of investment in research by his predecessors for a thin drug pipeline that has dragged down the group’s share price.'

Sweden could be a new nightmare for Elon Musk

“Port workers have refused to unload Tesla’s goods at Swedish ports for days, cleaning staff have announced their refusal to clean Tesla’s showrooms and workshops, and electricians have pledged not to repair the company’s charging stations. Since Nov 20, postal workers have joined the movement, ceasing deliveries of letters, spare parts, and pallets to all Tesla addresses in Sweden.”
"Forced sterilization, with its history of racism and eugenics, is banned under multiple international treaties. Thirty-seven European nations and the European Union have ratified the Istanbul Convention, which declares, without exception, that nonconsensual sterilization is a human rights violation.
But a New York Times investigation found over a third of those countries have made exceptions, often for people that the government deems too disabled to consent."

“However avaricious, the titans of past gilded eras still saw themselves as human members of civil society. Contemporary billionaires appear to understand civics and civilians as impediments to their progress, necessary victims of the externalities of their companies’ growth, sad artefacts of the civilisation they will leave behind in their inexorable colonisation of the next dimension.”

"His only direct reference to Roosevelt is an approving quotation taken from a speech the president gave attacking the “collectivism” of corporate America and calling for the reintroduction of a “democratic competitive order.” Hayek never even uses the term “free market” in the book. The problem, as Oreskes and Conway admit, is that the nuanced version of The Road to Serfdom is not one that reached the American people. Instead, Reader’s Digest produced a twenty-page condensation that found a mass audience."

"To find diverse CRISPR systems in nature, Zhang, MIT bioengineer Han Altae-Tran and their colleagues developed an algorithm called FLSHclust, which analyses genetic sequences in public databases. These databases contain hundreds of thousands of genomes from bacteria and archaea, hundreds of millions of sequences that haven’t been linked to a particular species and billions of genes that encode proteins. FLSHclust found CRISPR-associated genes by looking for similarities between genetic sequences and grouping them into about 500 million clusters."

The works presented here are created with alternative materials rather than etched on copper. From squashed paper costumes to packaging and leather book covers, objects are inked with different processes, both intaglio and planographic. Scales vary and are usually life-size. The paper costume prints are mostly made from real costumes (with the exception of the long dress, which is a smaller scale model) , worn by actors in a film project and subsequently smashed, inked and printed on cotton paper.”

"Just last Sunday, one of the estimated 20 surviving bicorne hats worn by Napoleon was sold at auction for €1.9mn, a price that vindicates the famous epigram, attributed to the emperor among others, that there is but one step separating the sublime from the ridiculous. The hat buyer remains anonymous, but you imagine him trying it on in front of a full-length mirror, probably with one hand in his jacket."

"A liberdade de Milei é a liberdade de ser deixado ao abandono se formos pobres e a liberdade de não ajudar ninguém se formos ricos. Não tem nada a ver com a libertação da fome, da pobreza, da dominação e da ignorância que constitui desde a Antiguidade o cerne mais profundo da ideia e da filosofia da liberdade."
"Led by German expert Stefanie Haustein, a group of scientists has now calculated the turnover of the “oligopoly” that controls this new market. Using mainly public funds, the scientific community paid the five large publishers $1.06 billion in four years. And according to this estimate, the sum covers only the fees to publish open access studies."
"Interestingly, residual Omenn Syndrome lymphocytes display characteristics proper of embryonic lymphocytes that emerge before, and independently from, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). This prompted us to hypothesize whether Omenn Syndrome autoreactive T-cells are generated in the embryo independently from HSCs."

'As of 2022, no journal published in Latin America appears in lists of the world’s publications with the highest impact factors; these journals are more vulnerable to economic conditions, and even closure. Spending years of work on research only to publish in a journal that will “die quickly” because it has no readership, Artaxo said, is a “waste of time, money, and everything.”
