"Given their obvious academic and innovation contributions to US academia and economy, one would expect that foreign-born researchers would be welcomed with open arms. In practice, however, they continue to face significant barriers to enter and participate in the US research enterprise. The most commonly discussed obstacles are the various forms of visa barriers faced by immigrant researchers, which have also been leveraged as a form of control of researchers in already vulnerable and precarious positions"

"This study demonstrates that #SARSCoV2 persistently infects the heart opportunistically causing cardiac dysfunction triggered by detrimental stimuli such as ischemia, potentially predicting a post #COVID19 era heart failure pandemic"

"Novartis’ anti-TIM-3 antibody has flunked a phase 3 blood cancer trial, prompting the Swiss drugmaker to pull the drug candidate from its pipeline. The failed study was the biggest test to date of an immuno-oncology target into which a who’s who of leading drug developers have pumped money."

We are excited to share our latest preprint, where we investigated the interindividual variability of DNA methylation in whole blood. Work led by Olivia Grant. Great collaboration with Prof Leo Schalkwyk & Prof Meena Kumari. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20 1/n

Some of these genetic variants are far from the site displaying epigenetic variation, but we found that they still occupy the same TAD (regions of the DNA that interacts with itself in 3D space more than expected by chance) 6/n

Russian chemist and inventor Dmitri Mendeleev died #OTD in 1907.

He is best known for formulating the Periodic Law and creating a version of the periodic table of elements. He used the Periodic Law not only to correct the then-accepted properties of some known elements, such as the valence & atomic weight of uranium, but also to predict the properties of three elements that were yet to be discovered (germanium, gallium and scandium). via @wikipedia

Really lovely how #censorship has been thriving in German institutions these last few months. Countless academics, writers and artists who have expressed solidarity with Palestine or dared to criticise Israel have had their contracts and engagements cancelled.

I hope one day there will be some realisation that this was deeply, deeply the wrong moral high horse to sit on.

"In 2022, there were 941 reported cases of measles in the World Health Organization’s European region. Over just the first 10 months of last year, according to an alarming bulletin the W.H.O. issued in mid-December, there were more than 30,000."

"Infections are the second-leading cause of death among cancer patients, and lead to one in five being hospitalised during treatment. Given that many cancer therapies weaken the immune system, making patients more susceptible to infections, this is to some extent to be expected. But increasingly clinicians see infections that are becoming drug-resistant — antibiotics once effective against them no longer work. Without new and effective antibiotics, this is only going to get worse, with more people surviving cancer only to die of an infection that was previously treatable."

I wish I could see this:

"Here, at this particular moment, means a rather spartan meeting room in the Almeida Theatre’s north London rehearsal rooms. The American actor, loved by many as the wise detective Lester Freamon in HBO’s The Wire and now 71, is taking a break from working on one of Shakespeare’s most enigmatic characters: the Fool in King Lear."
