Discuss with us about the topic "Legal acts on data and data protection"!
In our format #NFDI3questions3hours, we invite you to an open discussion on our Mastodon server. 🐘⁉️
In episode 4, we provide three questions on legal acts on data and data protection in the context of #NFDI. We look forward to an exciting exchange with you!

"We who are part of this system need to change it from within, and my sabbatical gave me the space to think about how to do so in a small way, and to help others navigate academia through my experience." https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-00381-5
"But in case you want to be more precise, let’s examine how enshittification works. It’s a three-stage process: first, platforms are good to their users. Then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers. Finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, there is a fourth stage: they die."

"First, SSC and FSC are measured to differentiate cells from debris."
"Being able to say, 'wherever you get your podcasts' is a radical statement. Because what it represents is the triumph of exactly the kind of technology that's supposed to be impossible: open, empowering tech that's not owned by any one company, that can't be controlled by any one company, and that allows people to have ownership over their work and their relationship with their audience." - @anildash
Powerful to think of this in the context of messaging too.

"I started working on ants in 2001 when I joined Bert Hölldobler’s department at the University of Würzburg as an undergrad, and I’ve never looked back. Initially, I wanted to become a tropical ecologist but then pivoted toward evolutionary biology and population genetics. Fast forward a few years and I’m giving an interview to Neuron, which I guess means I have now become a neurobiologist. Still studying ants of course."
'The best piece of advice I've had was from John Wallingford, and it was simple: “Read and learn how to write.” Learning how to write will save you a lot of time in a scientific or research career. Writing fast, writing well, writing clearly and concisely in a way makes people excited about your research – this is a skill that will definitely make your life easier.'

From Eugene Koonin et al:
"The Last Archaeal Common Ancestor likely encompassed a complex ESCRT system that was involved in protein sorting. Subsequent evolution involved either simplification, as in the TACK superphylum, where ESCRT was co-opted for cell division, or complexification as in Asgardarchaeota. In Asgardarchaeota, the connection between ESCRT and the ubiquitin system that was previously considered a eukaryotic signature was already established."

So apparently the term "patch" in software development comes from punch cards.
"Small corrections to the programmed sequence could be done by patching over portions of the paper tape and re-punching the holes in that section."
In it Idiscovered @mario_angst_sci 's organisation of a "conference satellite" in Zürich to avoid flying to Australia, a nice example of what we can do to avoid flying to distant conferences.
The art of war:
"Pulling from cancer’s playbook, Roybal and his colleagues incorporated 71 mutations, found in cancerous T cells, into CAR T cells. When they looked at how these perturbations affected T-cell function, one mutation stood out. The CAR T cells carrying an aberrant protein dubbed CARD11–PIK3R3 infiltrated well into tumours and had long-lasting cancer-killing activity."

The shifting orbit of one of Saturn’s moons indicates that the satellite has a subsurface ocean, contradicting theories that its interior is entirely solid.
