Recently wrote for this postmortem of the Oxford/AZ mucosal Covid vaccine trial. The intranasal spray version of ChAdOx1 failed to induce strong antibody responses.

But the column also includes a bit on the positive outcome of CanSino's trial using an inhaler (approved as a booster for 2x Coronavac).

I have to say that this is such an elegant study from first principles in @PNASNews

Hi all! I'm a postdoc, about to start my lab at Penn studying metabolic fluxes in tumor and immune cells! Also i like bad science puns!

Do you analyze #microbial growth data from a plate reader in #RStats?
Do you wish it was easier to import, organize, and merge your data?
Do you want to do model-free analyses of growth curves?

"Day six
There’s something missing. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Oh yes: where are all the arseholes? Where are the people who want dinghies full of migrants to sink into a freezing sea? Where are the people who call us libtards? Where, now I come to think of it, are all the Tory MPs?"

The latest episode of the is out today.

I spoke with Roberto di Lauro who's had a fascinating career at the NCI during the golden age of molecular biology there, in Naples - both at Federico II & running one of biology's mythical places, the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, and even served some time in the diplomatic core.

This was a fun talk about science, , , , science in Italy and much more.

Aedes aegypti Dicer2 mutants

"Our Dicer2 null mutant line is viable and fertile, and only displays minor fitness defects despite being unable to produce siRNAs. The loss of Dicer2 affects early viral replication and systemic viral dissemination of four medically significant arboviruses (chikungunya, Mayaro, dengue, and viruses) representing two viral families. However, measures of virus transmission potential indicate that Dicer2 null mutants and wild-type mosquitoes display an overall similar level of vector competence. Additionally, Dicer2 null mutants undergo significant virus-induced mortality during infection with virus, but not virus."

#introduction Hello #sciencemastodon I am a cell biologist running a research group in the UK focused on membrane traffic and cell division in human cells. I aim to post mainly about science but also music, running and cycling.

Please suggest a cool paper/preprint in your field in the last year or so!

For a course I teach, I am collecting papers on: cell/dev bio, microbio, neuro, maths/stats/CS/chem/phys applied to biology.

Students use one paper as the basis for a "research grant application" that they will write. So papers that are cool but also open doors to future study are ideal! Do you know one? It can be your own, I don't mind!

Epigenetics ROCKS!

Who would have guessed chromatin accessibility (ie nucleosome-free regions) contributes substantially to alternative splicing in specific cells 😎🆒

"But Earth’s rotation slows ever so slightly from year to year, and the astronomical second (like the astronomical day) has gradually grown longer than the atomic one. To compensate, starting in 1972, metrologists began occasionally inserting an extra second — a leap second — to the end of an atomic day. In effect, whenever atomic time is a full second ahead, it stops for a second to allow Earth to catch up. Ten leap seconds were added to the atomic time scale in 1972, and 27 more have been added since."
