Ok, an #introduction. I'm a #MultipleSclerosis researcher and IT person at UCL focussed on #MRI image analysis. Write a lot of #python and #rstats. As much #OpenScience as I'm allowed.

Away from work I make music with computers, analog synths and guitars. Also spend as much time as possible in a #kayak, on a bike or otherwise outdoors.

Hi! I’m an Assistant Professor at OU. My lab studies bacterial physiology in chronic infection, particularly Staphylococcus aureus #MRSA in #CF and #ChronicWounds. We leverage omics approaches and classic #microbiology techniques to ask foundational questions about how #microbe microbe interactions and the #infection environment impact this physiology. In addition, I am a mom #academicmom of two. Excited to check out this community!

I recommend this article "DEI conversations: more than a box-ticking exercise" by @@felicitydavis2@twitter.com
nature.com/articles/s41580-022
I hope we can take her message to heart of *not* being incremental in our DEI work, just as we don't want to be incremental in our research. It reminded me of this post from @mekkaokereke fediscience.org/@mekkaokereke@
about finding the write framing for change that fits an organization's culture -- this seemed like a convincing framework for researchers!

Okay, here's my Mastodon #introduction --
* Spent 10 years as an environmental policy reporter in DC.
* Last 14 years as a science writer for a university. Wrote a book on #scicomm for research institutions: press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/b
* Freelance writer and editor on everything from health to tech to food.
* I periodically write about random stuff on Medium. Such as this: medium.com/@shiplives/how-hank

If we write, a la Conan Doyle, "We are discovered. Flee at once," meet us at the sign of the purple elephant @PLOSBiology

"In January 2022, we reported the most comprehensive estimates of the global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance (“the GRAM report”), estimating that antimicrobial resistance was a contributing factor in 4.3 million deaths in 2019; of those, 1.27 million deaths were directly attributable to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) [1,2]. The study highlighted inequities, with the all-age death rate attributable to AMR highest in sub-Saharan Africa (23.7/100,000), despite this region not having the highest AMR prevalence, but because of the high infectious disease burden and fragile health systems."

Hey! We are brand new here. Hoping our 35,000 twitter followers + loads of new friends will join us to share our love of Folklore Films! #RIPTwitter

And remember, there is still love, light and beauty in the world!

Another #introduction for the latest wave!

I am a professor at Arizona State University. My lab studies host-beneficial #microbial infections in #eukaryotic cells. We are interested in how these infections are similar to and different from #pathogens, #mitochondria, and #plastids. We use #EvolutionaryBiology, #CellBiology, #genomics, #biochemistry, and #imaging as tools, and mostly study #bacteria that infect #insect cells but also work in other cool systems such as #plants and #lichens.

#Introduction time. I’m a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Glasgow
Research interests include #adipocytes #adiposetissue #metabolism #immunometabolism #immunity and #IL-17 !
I also founded The STEM Village, an initiative to promote visibility of #LGBTQ people in #STEM 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ you can find out more on our website thestemvillage.com or our #YouTube channel youtube.com/channel/UCULuHvpzP

"Madi et al. report the surprising finding that human and murine FOXP3+ Tregs are a physiological relevant source of Interleukin-15, a homeostatic cytokine that promotes antigen-independent maintenance of CD8+ memory T-cells. In mice that lack IL-15 selectively in FOXP3+Tregs the authors show that the composition of the CD8+ T-cell memory pool is altered in the absence of Treg-derived IL-15, since a subset of terminally effector memory cells is drastically reduced."

Lecturing on color vision today. The photographer in me always has to talk about the first color photo. Produced in 1861 by Thomas Sutton for James C. Maxwell, based on his three color additive method. A tartan coloured ribbon was photographed through red, green, and blue filters.

Happy #LGBTQSTEMDay everyone!

Looking forward to the panel discussion later with the microbiology society 🏳️‍🌈

Here’s a little interview from me: microbiologysociety.org/blog/l

Getting ready to teach in the spring and wanted to just give a shout-out to books that I've used at various points during the past five years of teaching "Political Epidemiology." First up... a🧵 1/
