UK Politics; Eton; Farage
Warning - this is a story that will make you furious, twice
Not only did Eton college boys subject state school girls who were attending an event at their school to “misogynistic language and racial slurs”, but the event in question was a speech by Nigel Farage
Yes, Eton invited hate-stoking, race-baiting, Trump-supporting, Putin-apologist Nigel Farage to speak to their students
What were they thinking??
Hello fellow mastodonians. For an #introduction of ourselves: We are a lab at the University of Zürich🇨🇭, reaearching commensal and pathogenic fungi and their interaction with the mammalian host. Interested in #immunology, medical #mycology, infectious diseases, homeostasis, antimicrobial resistance and much more! Hope the community of #medicalmycology will grow soon on mastodon 🐘
As the Amazing Criswell put it, we are all interested in the future, because that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives.
"In 2012, computer theorist Ben Goertzel proposed what he called the “robot university student test”, arguing that an AI capable of obtaining a degree in a same ways as a human should be considered conscious.
Goertzel’s idea – an alternative to the more famous “Turing test” – might have remained a thought experiment were it not for the successes of AIs employing natural language processing (NLP): most famously, GPT-3, the language model created by the OpenAi research laboratory."
The BQ.1.1 variant, as compared with many of the other new variants, is resistant to all clinically used monoclonal antibodies.
BQ.1/BQ.1.1 are now the dominant variants in the United States

"We therefore took advantage of PLX5622-mediated depletion of these myeloid cell subsets to examine their functional role in C. neoformans lung infection and extrapulmonary dissemination. We found that PLX5622-treated mice had significantly reduced fungal lung infection and reduced extrapulmonary dissemination to the CNS but not to the spleen or liver. Fungal lung infection mapped to MHCIIhi interstitial lung macrophages, which underwent significant expansion during infection following monocyte replenishment and not local division."

A good op piece in the Times about the need to keep vaccine development going, but I really dislike the framing of the issue as some sort of global competitive sport (eg 'foreign rivals'). This kind of zero sum thinking about public health is why we're still in this mess in 2023.
"But as a third pandemic winter begins in the United States, its vaccine-making effort has lost steam. Efforts to test and produce next-generation Covid vaccines are bogged down by bureaucratic problems and funding shortfalls. Foreign rivals have raced ahead in approving long-awaited nasal-spray vaccines, including one invented in St. Louis"

"We do not see double-anonymised review as the progressive answer to biases in peer review. We argue for sunlight instead of shadows: open peer review, with published review reports and optional open reviewer identities. Such openness helps to expose human biases and to discuss them publicly. It also allows for innovations in scholarly communication models. This is essential to tackle biases at the root, instead of just trying to minimise their consequences." https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2022/11/18/sunlight-not-shadows-double-anonymised-peer-review-is-not-the-answer-to-status-bias/ @tonyRH

A reminder/suggestion about writing a #thread 🧵 on #Mastodon: consider making your first post visible for all (Public 🌎), and setting visibility to Unlisted 🔓 for the rest. Great #tootorial here:

Incredibly excited to finally share this.. We’ve charted the full life cycle of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus with @MaastrichtU@twitter.com. Follow us inside the cell and see exactly what happens during an infection https://youtu.be/k2GlafQ9YhY
We recently developed a new single cell assay (QUAS-R) to measure glutamine uptake through Slc1a5.
