Last year, Jonathan Van-Tam gave 3 lectures on #covid that were available only in the UK. I pleaded with the Royal Institution to release them earlier, because they are top quality for younger students: how a virus enters a cell, PCR, exponential growth, the size of the human genome,...if you bundle up all of your B cells to form a ball: how big would that be? Even llamas make a guest appearance.

Terrific #scicomm, and everyone can enjoy them during this holiday season:

#introduction Hi All. I am @tisimpson on Twitter, just starting on here.

I'm interested in the application of computational/statistical methods to biomedical areas. Much of our work involves using multi-modal data: #genomic, #clinical, and #molecular to better understand neurological disease of genetic origin.

We develop and use a lot of #network, #dataintegration, #statistics, and #machinelearning approaches in our research.

"Twitter removed a feature in the past few days that promoted suicide prevention hotlines and other safety resources to users looking up certain content, according to two people familiar with the matter who said it was ordered by new owner Elon Musk"

Only a real asshole would do this. Ladies and gentlemen, Elon Musk. #Mastodon #News #Birdsite #SuicidePrevention

#Twitter has privately demanded suspended journalists delete the tweets that drew Elon Musk’s ire in the first place — a condition the reporters have refused to accept. "The result is a stalemate: The suspended journalists remain in Twitter purgatory, unable to access their accounts." -- Paul Farhi in the Washington Post. wapo.st/3YO5KiQ

1/2 Dr Peter Hotez warns: “The next big coronavirus pandemic is coming – the fourth one. I can’t tell you if it’s going to be next year or five years or 10 years, but it’s coming,” he warned.

“The reason why we’re seeing more and more of this is, in part, because of climate change and urbanization – human migrations encroaching into territories where bats are. It’s a combination of climate change with other social determinants.”

Hotez is co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s hospital and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in the US

Personally, it bothers me more than just a little that US journalists have stayed on a platform censuring journalism it does not like. I don't know why they continue to give him their content for free and prop him up.

Awesome! 🤩

The Dutch Universities and ICT infrastructure provider (SURF) are working on a pilot to provide Mastodon instances for the entire educational sector.

New preprint for the lab! We introduce GelMap, a method enabling intrinsic calibration and deformation mapping for expansion microscopy.

"Here, we tracked the co-development of microbiomes and metabolomes from late pregnancy to 1 year of age using longitudinal multi-omics data from a cohort of 70 mother-infant dyads. We discovered large-scale mother-to-infant interspecies transfer of mobile genetic elements, frequently involving genes associated with diet-related adaptations"

cc @Odedrechavi (even though it's not in worms, it might still be interesting)

Here's a belated #introduction post (which makes all my previous posts a cold open):

I am a theoretical biologist in the Department of Biology at UPenn. My research interests span social evolution across all species, including symbiosis, community ecology, animal behavior, cultural evolution, etc. I also am a Co-Editor of @ASNAmNat currently.

Enjoying mastodon, which has many (though not all -- yet) of what I liked about the bird site and little of the craziness (yet, maybe?).

Nikola Tesla holds a highly evacuated, gas-filled tube, powered by one of his high-frequency oscillator units. The one-amp tube operated without any connection to wires (“wireless energy”) over appreciable distances, which could have been greatly extended with more power. Exposure, two seconds with a lamp of 250 candlepower. circa 1898

New #instance means new #introduction
I am a #neurobiologist at the University of Magdeburg
After a PhD @bccnberlin with Michael Brecht and a postdoc with Susana Lima at the Champalimaud Foundation I recently joined the institute of biology in Magdeburg as a tenured researcher and professor.
My lab will study how neural circuits are at the interface between the multimodal environment and the homeostatic body in order to drive social and sexual behavior in mice.

We are looking for a lab tech to join our team using interdisciplinary approaches to study host-pathogen interactions. Great opportunity for someone looking for a 2-year position before grad school. Also considering longer appointments. Please share!

New instance, new #Introduction! I’m a historian of #VastEarlyAmerica, finishing a book about #Genealogy as both statecraft and intimate work in 18thc British America. I’ve just marked my one yr anniversary as director & librarian of the great John Carter Brown #Library - where we are doing exciting work that feels important - and prof at Brown U. I blog at my website and post images of historical genealogy on my IG, Vernacular Genealogy. I’m part of an admin team for historians.social.
