Isaac Asimov:
"I am an atheist, out and out. It took me a long time to say it. I've been an atheist for years and years, but somehow I felt it was intellectually unrespectable to say one was an atheist, because it assumed knowledge that one didn't have...."

'Attempts to eradicate cancer cells expressing unique target proteins, such as antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), T-cell engaging therapies, and radiopharmaceuticals have been successful in the clinic, but they are limited by the number of targets given the inability to target intracellular proteins.'

Instead of improving #US #copyright law to match the better terms in #Canada, my country pressured Canada to maim its copyright law to match the worse terms in the US.

"There will be no new books, songs or plays added to the public domain in Canada until 2043…The change brings Canada into compliance with a commitment it made under the new North American free trade deal to match its copyright protections with those in place in the United States since 1998."

"While the evolution of immune genes is often interpreted with host phylogeny as a principle explanatory factor [7,46], host ecology can be a stronger driver of microbiome community structure [47]. ... Here we identify how specific effectors evolved to constrain the growth of specific microbes, finding that host ecology, not host phylogeny, makes sense of effector-microbe specificity."

The Multiscale Genome Organization subgroup of the Biophysical Society is pleased to announce travel awards to pay the full cost of travel to attend the Biophysical Society meeting, up to $1,500. Awards are open to students and
postdoctoral scholars who work in the US. Please email applications to Jeff Wereszczynski (jwereszc@iit.edu)
and Catherine Musselman (catherine.musselman@cuanschutz.edu) by January 6,
2023. Those from communities underrepresented in science are highly encouraged to apply.

'In its range of themes and reconstructions, The Age of Interconnection invites favourable comparison with that other survey of the 20th century, Eric Hobsbawm’s The Age of Extremes. Yet it is quite unlike it. Where the Marxist historian offered a sweeping narrative arc illustrating the relentless advance of capitalism, Sperber dispenses with a unifying theme altogether. It’s a sign of the times: we’ve lost faith in grand narratives, more’s the pity. His framing sheds little light on his period. As every historian knows, all ages are ages of interconnection.'

A growing body of evidence suggests that brain-resident CD8 T cells and IFNg drive cellular and cognitive #aging in the #brain. Our @NatImmunol commentary on recent advances from @NatureNeuro goes into the #neuroimmunology mechanisms

"The genome organizer, special AT-rich binding protein-1 (SATB1) functions to globally regulate gene networks during primary T cells development and plays a pivotal role in lineage-specification in CD4+ helper-, CD8+ cytotoxic- and FOXP3+ regulatory-T cell subsets. However, it remains unclear how Satb1 gene expression is controlled, particularly in effector T cell function."

Incredible viral evasion mechanism here to avoid cells being able to present information (antigens) to T cells: SARS-CoV-2 accessory proteins ORF7a and ORF3a use distinct mechanisms to down-regulate MHC-I surface expression

Israel politics, science policy

the new minister of treasury decided to cancel the tax on sugary drinks (e.g. cola) and disposale (plastc) dishes which was implemented a year ago with good success. Why? becuase ultra-orthodox in the coalition demanded it - most of their voters are poor with lots of kids and they buy a lot of soft drinks & plastic dishes. they felt these taxs are "against them".
Diabetis in ultra-orthodox in Israel is highest in the population.

New preprint! "Consistency across multi-omics layers in a drug-perturbed gut microbial community" biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

We've used 5 different #omics methods (16S, #metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, and metabolomics) to monitor how a synthetic community of gut #microbes changes in time after drug treatment. Species abundance estimates are quite consistent, but metaT and metaP reveal the stress response of the bacteria. So in vitro metaT might be the most versatile seq method

"My adviser believed in me and persuaded the department to allow me to complete a master’s degree. So I carried on with my research, resigned to my situation. But with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests, things started to change. I watched as movements such as took hold, initiating discussions about the lack of support for first-generation, underrepresented students in academia. And I was heartened to see my program reassess its own approach."
