This article (and the photo) should put the fear of God into you. Between threatening voters, banning books and Black studies in schools and a plan to run for President, it’s clear that the fascism and racism of Ron DeSantis is a bald face attempt to get his hateful base riled up. t.co/3A9f2uFxun

"One beer too many, and a verbal dispute suddenly and unexpectedly explodes into a punching match.
Such things happen every night in bars, pubs, and cafés all across the world, but the bloody noses and aching jaws that generally follow from these dustups in Canada, Norway, or France often turn out to be gunshot wounds in the United States."

How are ribosomes stored in the egg? Thanks to a fantastic team effort lead by @FriedaLeesch & @llorenzoorts in collab with @haselbachlab & colleagues from the @IMPvienna @viennabiocenter, we discovered a new dormant state of ribosomes in fish & frog eggs.

'In the decade since the publication of CRISPR-Cas9 as a genome-editing technology, the CRISPR toolbox and its applications have profoundly changed basic and applied biological research. Wang and Doudna now review the origins and utility of -based genome editing, the successes and current limitations of the technology, and where innovation and engineering are needed.'

#AI is going to challenge all sorts of ways we do things at the moment. Not necessarily for the worse, but we will have to review processes and their outputs differently.

"However, despite deep knowledge about the genomic drivers of cancer—from oncogenic mutations to chromosomal rearrangements—we do not yet know how the spatial arrangement of the tumor microenvironment (TME) impacts pathogenesis; for instance, which feature types and spatial scales are relevant, how disease-associated histological features relate to molecular states, and whether morphological differences are discrete (like mutations) or continuous (like morphogen gradients)."

This is supposed to be a feel-good story.

It’s actually a parable for how horrible the health care system is in the United States.

Imagine being such a cruel, twisted, soulless, corpse-like shell, such a degraded, sociopathic bigot, that you squander your time on Earth trying to rile up hatred against love itself - and attribute your vileness to a teacher whose message was: "Love your neighbor as yourself." #LGBTQ

Cladoceran "water fleas" are characteristically parthenogenic: all female populations producing clones of themselves. However under stress or end of season, they hatch males which mate to produce hard resting eggs called ephippia, so tough they can survive *centuries and be viable, introducing genetic variation. This created a new field of study termed "resurrection ecology" by Kerfoot and Weider who hatched them in lab from sediment cores.

'“Decisions about health and human flourishing are too often decided without directly impacted people at the table, but it's critically important to build trust by our voices being part of the conversation, in order to understand why and what drives the reluctance we may have to trusting the healthcare system,” said DeAnna Hoskins.'

@SteveBHolt Great point, about time that such core academic service is transferred back to university libraries where it belongs. For the time being, there’s scholar.archive.org (a charity organisation) which works pleasantly well, and doesn’t play the game of citations and h-index and similar rubbish metrics of academic performance, focusing instead on archiving and ensuring access to the papers.

Alienated academics:

A qualitative interview study finds that a merger between two Finnish universities produced different types of alienation among staff.
