@cyrilpedia nice piece. Good movements. I would think that increasing funding for creating AI standards would be easier than a new agency.

ICYMI at the end of last year.
This was a really interesting episode of the with Roberto di Lauro, a former group leader at the EMBL, professor at the University of Naples Federico II, and President of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn.

One aspect I really enjoyed was the discussion on the need for different types of research for different communities and applications - as well as some great discussions on the history of

Postdoc job in Bristol with Jeff Bowers, Ben Evans and me. We're going to look into how much learning you can do without modifying synaptic weights in spiking neurons. Likely important in the brain and relatively less studied theoretically.

If you like my neural heterogeneity paper (neural-reckoning.org/pub_heter) you'd probably like this project too.

Not news, but stumbled upon a Nicholas Florko piece about how Trump officials lobbied AGAINST giving states additional funding for vaccine roll out and pandemic response in the fall of 2020. WTF?

Heading up the effort was HHS's Paul Mango, WH's Russ Vought.

"Without the extra money, states spent last October and November rationing the small pot of federal dollars they had been given. And when vaccines began shipping in December, states seemed woefully underprepared."

"This baby could live a normal life.

The problem was the price: The treatment cost the equivalent of $1.7 million, and the public health system in Brazil, where the family lives, was refusing to pay for it."

1. Florida teachers are being told to remove all books from their classroom libraries OR FACE FELONY PROSECUTION

The new policy is based on the premise that teachers are using books to "groom" students or indoctrinate them with leftist ideologies.

"But at the very first step in turning that picture into prose I’d run into a yawning gap between the big idea and the resources of my own brain. This then is a tale of how, inevitably, writing popular science means stretching beyond your own expertise. And of how I embrace that challenge, because it gives me the tools to take the reader deep into the science."
