Anti-vaxxer and presidential candidate #RFKjr quoted saying #COVID19 may have been “targeted to attack Caucasians and black people. The people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese.” https://nypost.com/2023/07/15/rfk-jr-says-covid-was-ethnically-targeted-to-spare-jews/
Analyzing DNA from seawater reveals how water temperature impacts interactions between different fish species. https://elifesciences.org/digests/85795/warming-waters?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=organic
'For the convenience of human experimentalists and caretakers, and to decrease costs, mice are generally housed at environmental temperatures below their thermoneutrality. Our comfort and fiscal frugality come at costs that may include inappropriate interpretation of findings and even compromised translatability of experimental findings to human physiology and disease.'
'The role of perceived experts (i.e., medical professionals and biomedical scientists) as potential anti-vaccine influencers has not been characterized systematically.'

What are the foundational principles of #neuroscience? By which I mean: beliefs or assumptions that animate our study of the brain across topics. Things like a belief in a structure-function relationship or the neuron as the base unit.
The only flaw I feel #Mastodon has is the lack of a tool to search content, otherwise imho it is a *true* social/public media platform
You can get notifications when anyone you are interested/like posts stuff, you can follow hashtags, you are not spoonfed content you never requested, you can edit your posts, you can send DMs, add cool emojis
and we have #Caturday!!
I have *no* idea why some people find it alienating or difficult 🤔
I’m in full support of the SAG/AFRA and WGA and I love Ron Pearlman’s comment here.
As a jobbing actor my residuals for the last year for all the shows I’m in that have made a LOT of money for the streaming platforms they’re on came to around £35. my annual residuals from one of the most popular shows on Netflix came to the same price as I’d have got for 1 DVD box set sold.

'I would love to see how the French respond to this book, which so far has only been published in English. Will they resent his American presumption to explain France? Or will they acknowledge that Mr. Bonné, like a modern-day Tocqueville, has presented an insightful mirror to their culture?'
This was a great conversation with Pavel Tomancak & @tlemberger for the EMBO Podcast.

Remember that abysmal attempt at creating a fake paper detector that #Science magazine trumpeted? The one that just looked to see if you used your institutional email address, had international collaborators, and were (not) affiliated with a hospital?
The one that instantiated the authors biases and then they turned around and used as evidence for those biases?
Science has just published the letter that Brandon Ogbunugafor and I wrote.
I am very skeptical of that claim, and eLife assesses the evidence as incomplete.
When earlier work along similar by some of these authors was published 6 years ago, I expressed my doubts here:

most of these concerns still stand.
Today 25 years ago the #Spanish government sent their police to close the #Basque #newspaper #Egin. They arrested many journalists, put them in jail, and in 2009 a Spanish court concluded that no illicit activity was engaged by the newspaper and radio station Egin. However, nothing happened to anyone involved in this human rights violation, be it judges, politicians or police.
Paper from the Vosshall lab on why some people are mosquito attractors
"Although CO2 and heat are generic stimuli that signify a living warm-blooded animal, skin odor provides information about whether the target is a human or non-human animal (McBride et al., 2014; Rose et al., 2020; Zhao et al., 2022). It is well-documented that mosquitoes are more strongly attracted to some humans than others"
' In this Perspective, we outline fairness in machine learning through the lens of healthcare, and discuss how algorithmic biases (in data acquisition, genetic variation and intra-observer labelling variability, in particular) arise in clinical workflows and the resulting healthcare disparities'
