'Threads in a textbook triumph of enthusiasm over experience. I’m sure that creating free content for a social-media platform run by an unaccountable billionaire will turn out differently this time, we tell ourselves, as though we were all born yesterday.'

'There are few constants within the world of weight loss, but one concept holds up: No matter how you lose weight — through restrictive eating, bariatric surgery or the new, buzzy class of injectable medications like Ozempic and Wegovy — you’re also probably shedding muscle'

'Beneath all the breathless chaos that’s synonymous with the show, is a meticulous sense of craft and focus which means that scarcely a moment in the 10-episode run is redundant or wasted. Every line, shot and performance contributes to the feeling that what we’re watching is the best thing on television right now.'

Stanford president’s departure begs the question: Who takes the credit — or blame — in team science? https://www.statnews.com/2023/07/19/stanford-president-marc-tessier-lavigne-resignation-analysis/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=mastodon_organic
Found an incredibly useful app for finding people to follow on Mastodon. It crawls your social graph then finds the people who your followers follow the most that you don't follow.
'The UKHSA said that, besides young children, “susceptibility to measles is particularly high among 19- to 25-year-olds, affected by unfounded stories in the early 2000s” that MMR caused autism. It said these “Wakefield cohorts” of unvaccinated young adults — named after Andrew Wakefield, who promoted the now discredited idea that MMR jabs had unacceptable side-effects — would be most vulnerable in a large outbreak.'

'The authors found a link between asymptomatic infection and an HLA mutation carried by about 10% of the study’s population. People with the mutated gene were twice as likely to remain asymptomatic as were people without it; people with two copies of the gene were eight times as likely. “We were pretty stunned by the magnitude of the effect,” Hollenbach says.'

Not sure we needed new evidence for this...
"Because new evidence shows that legacy admissions overwhelmingly advantage white applicants, discontinuing those policies and practices is one clear way."
'Therefore, to understand the influence of Wolbachia on within-host ZIKV evolution, we characterized the genetic diversity of molecularly barcoded ZIKV virus populations replicating in Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes and found that within-host ZIKV evolution was subject to weak purifying selection and, unexpectedly, loose anatomical bottlenecks in the presence and absence of Wolbachia'

'Tessier-Lavigne will be blamed for his vigorous and sometimes bombastic denials of scientific misconduct (here, here, and here), which while perhaps technically correct, don’t read well in light of a report that says his lab culture allowed repeated manipulation of research data. But there is another big issue here that is important for science—running a research laboratory is a full-time job and can’t be done effectively when the principal investigator is simultaneously fulfilling a challenging administrative role.'

“The knowledge content of scientific theories has been interpreted as restricted to the ability to give predictions. In this way, in my opinion, we lose sight of science’s ability to subvert and widen our vision of the world.”

'The Stanford panel’s 89-page report, based on more than 50 interviews and a review of more than 50,000 documents, concluded that members of Dr. Tessier-Lavigne’s labs engaged in inappropriate manipulation of research data or deficient scientific practices, resulting in significant flaws in five papers that listed Dr. Tessier-Lavigne as the principal author.'
'The researchers combined temperature data from high-resolution satellite sources with weekly counts of all-cause mortality, by sex and age group from 2015 to 2022 Notably, the burden of heat-related mortality fell heavily on women and older people, reflecting a pressing need for interventions specifically designed to protect these groups.'
@cyrilpedia I enjoy the sealed sphere with the aquatic ecosystem that has been cut off from the outside world for 50 years or so and still functions and supports multicellular life
I took almost six years to finish my #phd
My advisor moved from US to UK in my third year.
The nobel laureate on my committee was, shall we say, fastidious, but in a dogmatic way, requiring thesis edits ad nauseam.
Fortunately, my to be post doc advisor hired me before finishing, so at least I wasn’t living in poverty while I finished.
