The Heritage Foundation, funded by the Koch brothers, wants to kill you. Or they simply do not care. They have put together a plan for the next Republican President to dismantle every environmental and #climate program, policy and agency in the US Gov.

Does species richness ensure #resilience? Karatayev et al. show that it does not: Alternative consumer- or resource-dominated states can arise in #foodWebs with low trait #diversity or high functional redundancy. Thus diversity only limits the #feedbacks that can produce #alternativeStableStates.

“I was forty-five years old and tired of being an artist. Besides, I owed $20,000 to relatives, finance companies, banks, and assorted bookmakers and shylocks. It was really time to grow up and sell out, as Lenny Bruce once advised.”
Mario Puzo (in Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli)

'On July 7, a Tulsa County district judge dismissed a recent lawsuit brought by three living survivors of the 1921 attack: Viola Fletcher, 109; Lessie Benningfield Randle, 108; and Hughes Van Ellis, 102. Their attorneys argued that the City of Tulsa and other government entities were directly involved in the decimation of Greenwood. Police officers deputized members of the white mob, witnesses reported seeing officers taking part in the destruction, and Tulsa’s mayor at the time, T.D. Evans, wrongly blamed a “negro uprising” for the destruction.'

'Here, we used a human tonsil organoid platform to elucidate the cellular dynamics of Ag-reactive B and T cells in primary human tonsils as they responded to IIV, LAIV, and viruses. Tonsil organoids are a useful system for tracking human adaptive immunity and can recapitulate numerous aspects of the developing B and T cell response'

"After getting involved with my postdoctoral association’s advocacy committee, I quickly saw that many incoming postdocs were facing similar troubles. Wanting to do what I could to help, I took on the role of disseminating information about work-life balance and mental health, announcing seminars, meditation sessions, and mental well-being programs."

My new Clinical Pipeline column is out in Nature Medicine.

It's on JAK inhibitors for alopecia - and at the black box safety warning the FDA attached to this entire class of drugs.

'In Disputed Inheritance, historian of science Gregory Radick provides a scholarly, detailed and perceptive analysis of why Mendelian genetics has long dominated our approach to understanding inheritance, despite valiant attempts to propose alternatives. The answer lies in fierce competition between two scientists in the early days of the field.'

Lab-based PhD will be testing as well

"Four years of self-directed study, especially in a non-laboratory based, solo subject such as economics, will test your reserves of internal motivation."

I just breezed through 'The Knowledge Machine' by Michael Strevens. (Thanks to the recommendation from @NicoleCRust !)

Improbably, it's a pop science book about the philosophy of science. And it's quite good, even if you disagree with him.

Most radical is his "iron rule of explanation".

'Marketers have been using scientific-sounding buzzwords to sell products for centuries. But it’s becoming more common, said Timothy Caulfield, a research chair in health law and policy at the University of Alberta. Mr. Caulfield coined the term “scienceploitation” to describe how brands borrow language from emerging areas of science to market unproven products.'

'Here, we used CRISPR-based loss-of-function screens to identify a markedly limited set of ISGs that confer interferon-mediated suppression of a model alphavirus, Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV). We show via combinatorial gene targeting that three antiviral effectors—ZAP, IFIT3, and IFIT1—together constitute the majority of interferon-mediated restriction of VEEV, while accounting for < 0.5% of the interferon-induced transcriptome.'

Alright I’m (reluctantly) back and trying out this app.

Might as well start on a high note: the lab has been awarded our first big NSF. Our BRC-BIO grant will support our work using #astrangia to study how variation in multi-partner symbioses affects host immunity. This project also supports undergraduate research experiences for students at TXST and RWU (w/ awesome co-PI Koty Sharp). We’re pretty pumped!
