"Mass death has long been normalized on Europe’s borders. More than 27,800 people have died or disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea since 2014 — and that is most likely a large underestimate. This year is shaping up to be especially deadly."

“The algorithm-based approaches that people are taking are suboptimal,” says Drew Hannaman, head of R&D at Ichor Medical Systems, which obtained an empirical neoantigen selection platform after Genocea’s bankruptcy last year. “[Algorithm-based approaches] are pretty good at identifying a property that is necessary to generate immune response. But they are not comprehensive enough to identify the properties that are necessary and sufficient.” The result, Hannaman says, is “a lot of false positives”.

#Introduction

Hi, I'm a #SystemsNeuroscientist at #KISNeuro in #Trondheim #Norway. Just moving over from another server.

I'm here to learn about exciting new science, explore topics loosely related to my own work, and connect with new people. I particularly like the "big" conversations about (neuro)science here that don't occur often enough in the lab.

Madrid vermuterias:

"Two gentlemen, in suits and hats, one with a cane, sat next to each other at the far end of the bar. They looked dressed from an era when people didn’t wear T-shirts and never left the house without a hat.

“I have been sitting in this seat every day for 50 years,” said Jaime, 91."

'The coyote never orders the same product from the Acme catalog twice. “The President did not ask the Academy for advice about global warming again,” writes Jim Hansen, “during the remainder of his eight years in power.”

'Predatory publishers step into this void and accustom uninformed researchers to scientific publishing that is fast and obstacle-free. Once hooked, some authors keep going back to these predatory journals, confusing speed with quality. “OMICS is open access, relatively straightforward and timely. Much less of a hassle and less arrogant than old-school society journals,” one survey respondent wrote.'

'Mark Carrigan, a digital sociologist at the Manchester Institute for Education, UK, argues that the idea that Twitter helped democratize academia “was a bit simplistic” because social media created a space where academic celebrities thrived.'

'For Le Guin, writing was a “willingness to relinquish control, an act of trust.” Her universes were born of the belief that her imaginative instincts would take her where she needed to go — out among her fellow aliens and the stars.'

America's Frontline Doctors is a political group holding extremist political views.

At least one of these doctors took part in the violent Jan 6th insurrection.

Funeral Invitation, 1688.

Funeral invitations first appeared in the 17th century, and acted as an admission ticket to both the church and the funeral feast. Pallbearers were often assigned a number on the ticket to signify their position in carrying the coffin.

I loved the description of the K-T Boundary as a "great ecological cast change"

'We can’t help but draw our own history to this specific moment, the dawn of the Age of Mammals, when fuzzy beasts could finally flourish. Dominant dinosaurs suffered a stroke of cosmic bad fortune, and our mammalian kin inherited a planet where they would no longer have to fear death in reptilian jaws. The image is of a great ecological cast change, different players continuing the evolutionary story. It’s a very appealing distortion.'

A lot has changed since my #introduction:
Now I'm a #postdoc in Liège (Belgium) trying to figure out how #neuroethology works.
I will be working with two #Peromyscus species.
My focus is the processing of #smell, especially #predator #odours, but most likely also #SocialOdors

I'm still looking for more #AnimalBehaviour, #BehavioralEcology, and #ChemicalEcology folks to follow!

Updating Horizontal Gene Transfer
by Mechas and Roberto
We recently prepared a lecture that included a brief discussion of bacterial evolution. Of course, we covered horizontal gene transfer (HGT), which we consider a key pillar in the evolutionary process. We dutifully began our presentation by listing, perforce: transformation, conjugation, and transduction.

A rare #nature paper with negative results: "No evidence for magnetic field effects on the behaviour of Drosophila"

The Nation published a damning story about the depth of Harvard's ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

I have no doubt that almost all of it is true.

However, there's an egregious lapse in fact-checking that does a serious injustice to Stephen Jay Gould. In the story, Alan Dershowitz claims that Gould was a regular at Program for Evolutionary Dynamics events at One Brattle Square.

Gould died in 2002. Nowak came to Harvard and opened the One Brattle Square facility in 2003.

'Prof Danny Altmann, an immunologist at Imperial College London, said: “JCVI have done their calculation in favour of a very limited vaccine offer for the elderly and immunosuppressed, leaving the bulk of the population way out from their last dose and poorly protected.”
