'If the F.D.A. ordered their removal, a trade group warned that numerous popular products — including Tylenol, Mucinex and Benadryl cold and flu remedies — might become unavailable as companies race to reformulate them.'

'Three hospitals declined to provide the procedure, she said. At the third, “they said, ‘We can’t touch you unless you’re like crashing in front of us,’” Ms. Statton, 26, said in an interview. The hospital’s only suggestion, she said, was “we should wait in the parking lot until I was about to die.”

"Musk is losing, too. Every day, he becomes a bigger punchline. Someday, the outsize tab he’s run trying to keep hold of Twitter will come due. I hope that when it happens, the expats of Twitter will have settled in a new place where we can watch his downfall together." Andrea Grimes, Dame Magazine

The team also modeled the probability of adverse events from mRNA vaccination, direct medical costs from COVID-19, and productivity loss from COVID-19, cost of medications to treat COVID-19, and the cost of vaccination. I will say that the cost of hospitalization from...

'Some have argued that this contrast is an exaggeration, since the EU, unlike the US, already had a Green Deal in place, involving funding pledges not too dissimilar to Biden’s. Alas, the devil is in the detail: the EU’s Green Deal offers up to €1tn of pledges that – unlike the funding offered in Biden’s act – is not actual money, but rather a fictional number akin to the notorious Juncker plan, whose pledged €300bn of new investment funds never really materialised.'

I'm re-reading Defoe's A Journal of the Plague Year. I'd forgotten there's a section on how, during such crises, people become prone to irrational beliefs and charlatans promoting, for want of a better expression, 'conspiracy theories' and anti-scientific ideas, and how these obsessional beliefs engender paranoia and the threat of group violence against 'non believers'. Maybe it's just something that (some) humans do in such times...

'The whole thing is a political show. They say they want to reduce the cost of the asylum system, but this boat and the way we have been dealt with must have cost a fortune. At the moment there are 39 asylum seekers here, and there are 20 staff for 39 people. Previously, in our hotel before we were moved to the Bibby Stockholm, there were only about 10 members of staff for 300 asylum seekers, so how can that be said to be about reducing the cost?

Any bioinformaticians help me out?

I'm looking for a server/program/whatever that, given 2 protein sequences from organism X, will go away and hunt down a few hundred equivalent sequences from other organisms, and then look at evolutionary covariance (at an amino acid level).

I'm looking to see if there is something out there that already does what I need, before going in. I'm certain there should be, bit I can't find it yet.

"In late 1977, as the Chilean military junta extended the state of siege in place since its 1973 coup and formally dissolved all political parties, Friedrich Hayek wrote a letter to a German newspaper, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, to protest what he depicted as unfair international criticism of the government of General Augusto Pinochet."
