It’s #PeerReviewWeek so we would like to show our appreciation for all our reviewers! We are aware of the importance of high-quality peer review, so we thank our reviewers for investing their time and expertise in ensuring that the quality of our scientific papers is maintained.
To acknowledge the support of our peer reviewers, we are protecting ancient woodland for each completed peer review as part of our biodiversity initiative #forestofbiologists.

Why not host a science cafe yourself? 🍺
In a science café, scientists talk about current, socially relevant and fascinating topics in an approachable way. Quite a few Flemish cities already have a science café, but there are many more without one.

#IDMastodon #priondisease After #COVID19 A #CaseReport
A few cases of PrD after #COVID19 with various neurological complications have been recognized in people after contracting #COVID19. While anosmia is considered a regular consequence of COVID, it is typically underrecognized as cranial nerve I dysfunction, a common neurological complication.
Possibly *not* a neuro-specific problem:
"Despite recent advances in statistical methods, current neuroscience research is often conducted using a limited set of well-known statistical tools. Many models and tests assume that the observations are independent of one another. Failure to account for this dependency in the data often leads to an increased number of false positives, a major cause of the irreproducibility crisis"

Have you used the FocalPlane Network?
We all know that @HenriquesLab gives a fantastic talk but check out our post to find out why Ricardo thinks the Network can be a great resource to diversify your speaker list, as well as to find reviewers, panellists & collaborators.
Really kinda shocking actually. I really thought this would be more level. Apparently the vast, vast majority of respondents are pro Oxford comma (87% for, N = 62).
Also good to know that this is definitively not pineapple on pizza all over again 😤

'We assessed the role of ORF6 during infection using recombinant viruses carrying a deletion or loss-of-function (LoF) mutation in ORF6. ORF6 plays key roles in interferon antagonism and viral pathogenesis by interfering with nuclear import and specifically the translocation of IRF and STAT transcription factors.'

'It might look like a market, but Varoufakis says it’s anything but. Jeff (Bezos, the owner of Amazon) doesn’t produce capital, he argues. He charges rent. Which isn’t capitalism, it’s feudalism. And us? We’re the serfs.'
Ole Christensen Rømer died #OTD in 1644.
He was a Danish astronomer who, in 1676, made the first measurement of the speed of light (to be approximately 220,000 kilometers per second while working at the Royal Observatory in Paris) and discovery that light travels at a finite speed. Rømer also invented the modern thermometer showing the temperature between two fixed points, namely the points at which water respectively boils and freezes. via @wikipedia
