“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.”

The International Meridian Conference designates the Royal Observatory, Greenwich as the world's prime meridian #OTD in 1884.

The main issue at the conference was France's insistence that the meridian should have a strictly neutral character in the same way that they maintained that the metre was a neutral measure. Most European countries aligned their clocks with Greenwich within ten years, Sweden and North America already having done so, and the trend continued. via @wikipedia

"Like most medical researchers, Dr. Pattillo had known about the HeLa cells since he was a graduate student. As it happened, he had also been a fellow in the Johns Hopkins lab in Baltimore that had first cultured them, one of the few Black doctors working there in the late 1960s.
But unlike many other scientists, Dr. Pattillo was keenly focused on the fact that there was a human being behind those cells, and that she had left a family behind. For years he had wanted to honor her contributions to science."

"At the same time, wealthy nations have, for centuries, been extracting natural resources from low- and middle-income countries and pocketing the proceeds. Scientific data, unfortunately, have been among those resources."

"The people in power are still doubling down on everything that brought us here. They are still outsourcing the pandemic response to the rapacious private healthcare industry. They are still implying that the Covid dead have only themselves to blame—after all, “we have the tools.” They are still insisting that the fault must not be in our stars but in ourselves, transforming an issue of public health into one of personal responsibility."
