"Their film is an intimate and righteous production that centers on Nicole Smith-Holt and James Holt, the Minnesota couple whose son Alec died mere months after turning 26 and being cut off from his parents’ health insurance."

"But back in 1857, when the idea of the dictionary was born, its three founders proposed something more democratic than authoritative: a reference book that didn’t prescribe but instead described English, tracking the meaning of every word in the language across time and laying out how people were actually using each one."
A new episode of the EMBO podcast is out. I spoke with Hsiao-Han Chang, Gytis Dudas, and Hedvig Tamman about viruses, hosts, spillovers, public health... And also starting a new lab, the challenges of mobility, mentorship, and Die Hard Dracula.

German geophysicist Alfred Wegener, who formulated the 1st complete statement of the continental drift hypothesis was born #OTD in 1880.
About 1910 he began toying with the idea that in the late Paleozoic Era all the present-day continents had formed a single large mass, or supercontinent, which had subsequently broken apart. He called this ancient continent Pangaea & he proposed that it's constituent portions had slowly moved thousands of miles apart over long periods of geologic time.

"He was doing physical therapy, spending time with family members, and playing cards with his wife, according to the university. But in the days leading up to his death, his heart began to show signs of organ rejection; in other words, his immune system recognized the pig heart as foreign and attacked it. "

@halama_immuno @cyrilpedia thank you. Love the expression 'to be continued'! Should be final line of all our papers!
@gpollara @cyrilpedia Well...trials so far have shown: big toxicity, limited clinical effects and some suggest an increase in inhibitory Tregs...why there are modified IL-2 therapies around to limit toxic and Treg induction...to be continued #Immunotherapy #immunology #cytokines
@cyrilpedia an interesting idea, but personally, I think there's going to be way too small a therapeutic window to use IL-2 based therapies in a useful way. So ubiquitous and if it's function is so concentration dependent, then local tissue concentrations etc... will have big effect on function. Happy to be proved wrong!
Always boost/repost animal cognition breakthroughs, especially cephalopods!

"Discussions around neurodivergence and neurodiversity have become more common over the past few years. However, this increased awareness has not necessarily led to better support and understanding."

"The tower, which, along with the Asinelli Tower, makes up the “two towers,” a symbol of the city, has historically slanted four degrees. But recent surveys have found traces of unexpected rotation in its incline and other imperceptible movements that need to be studied more carefully, the authorities said."

'This is a central Laurencin paradox: She thrived in an art world that was almost entirely male by painting a world filled almost exclusively by women. When Laurencin pursued the French tradition of the 18th-century fête galante painting — pastoral scenes of courtship, flirtation and romantic intrigue epitomized by the work of Antoine Watteau — she excised all the men.'

"By his mid-20s, Mr. Holmes thought about what was ahead for him — sickle cell emergency after emergency, begging for help in Alabama hospitals that saw a Black man and assumed him to be a drug addict — and he started to think about ending his life. “Every time I tried anything, the disease would come and knock me away,” he remembered. “You get tired. You get worn out.”'
