Last month NHS England awarded a £330m contract to the US company Palantir for the procurement of a data platform for the NHS.

In Portugal, as everywhere else in the world, if men could not vote, there would be no far right problem.

The COP 28 President is talking utter BS.
“Al Jaber is asking for a 1.5C roadmap – anyone who cares can find that in the International Energy Agency’s latest net zero emissions scenario, which says there cannot be any new fossil fuel development. The science is absolutely clear [and] that absolutely means a phase-out by mid-century, which will enhance the lives of all of humanity.”

"Here, we test a protein design pipeline that uses iterative rounds of deep learning (DL)-based structure prediction (AlphaFold2) and sequence optimization (ProteinMPNN) to design autoinhibitory domains (AiDs) for a PD-L1 antagonist."

Record drought could keep Amazon dry through 2026
"From killing hundreds of endangered river dolphins -
to threatening the livelihoods of millions of people.
This is the impact of the Amazon #rainforest's historic #drought.
Its sapped the #AmazonRiver and four of its biggest tributaries to their lowest level in at least half a century.
And the worst may be yet to come.
Experts are predicting an even more intense drought next year - due to extreme ocean temperatures worsened by global warming." #climate #Brazil

"We hypothesized that elevated Gαq stimulation within the syncytiotrophoblast layer contributes to the pathogenesis of #preeclampsia through disruption of normal redox balance and thus the induction of syncytiotrophoblast stress."
"Here, we summarize the latest insights into cellular uptake mechanisms and pathways in DCs. We highlight the approaches to study endocytosis, the impact of endocytosis routes on T cell response, and discuss the link between how DCs internalize therapeutic antibodies and the potential mechanisms that could give rise to immunogenicity"

Buster Keaton's "The General" at one of Lisbon's most special spots, a Cinemateca Portuguesa. Bonus: accompanied by a live pianist.
“This release . . . is the culmination of 20 years of work and it’s the largest ever release of whole genome sequences in history,” said Cheryl Moore, chief research programmes officer at the Wellcome Trust. “Scientific data that is openly shared allows everyone to contribute groundbreaking discoveries.”

"The book wasn’t published for two years, not before perestroika and Gorbachev. “After reading your book no one will fight,” the censor lectured me. “Your war is terrifying. Why don’t you have any heroes?” I wasn’t looking for heroes. I was writing history through the stories of its unnoticed witnesses and participants. They had never been asked anything."

American Mathematician John Warner Backus was born #OTD in 1924.
He directed the team that invented and implemented FORTRAN, the first widely used high-level programming language, and was the inventor of the Backus–Naur form (BNF), a widely used notation to define formal language syntax. He later did research into the function-level programming paradigm, presenting his findings in his influential 1977 Turing Award lecture "Can Programming Be Liberated from the von Neumann Style?"
"Von Neumann languages do not have useful properties for reasoning about programs. Axiomatic and denotational semantics are precise tools for describing and understanding conventional programs, but they only talk about them and cannot alter their ungainly properties. Unlike von Neumann languages, the language of ordinary algebra is suitable both for stating its laws and for transforming an equation into its solution, all within the "language.""

This one has it all: mystery western blot bands, red blood cells, pandemic disruptions, grumpy reviewers 🎧👇
From @RELenski post, How to Write a Response to Reviewers in Ten Easy Steps:
"Pay special attention to comments where two (or more) reviewers comment on the same issue. If they both agree (for example, they tell you to clarify or delete some passage), then that is almost certainly something you should do"
FUCKING HELL KEITH.
Keir Starmer praises Margaret Thatcher for bringing ‘meaningful change’ to UK.
'Pese al criterio de los expertos en Estados Unidos, la legislación antitrans avanza imparable. Hay un gráfico elocuente que compara el mapa del país el 1 de enero de 2021 con el de este otoño. En el de la izquierda, los 50 Estados aparecen en blanco. En el de la derecha, lucen coloreados los 22 que han aprobado leyes que prohíben a los menores el acceso a los tratamientos de género.'
