Analysing the vocalisations of wild orangutans reveals that they combine vocal units in patterns previously thought to be unique to humans. elifesciences.org/digests/8834

One thing that I think a lot of people may be overlooking is that Abbott’s (armed) defiance of the federal government — now backed by Trump and 25 GOP governors — is exactly what right-wing extremists have been waiting for. And training for. I have been writing about this exact situation for 6 years (see below); extremists have been preparing for this day much longer. This is almost biblical for them.

'We show that decidual tissues of women with preconception immunity against CMV exhibit intrinsic resistance to HCMV, mounting a rapid activation of tissue-resident memory CD8+ and CD4+ T cells upon HCMV reinfection.'

“In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible,” he wrote in “Politics and the English Language” (1946). “Things like the continuance of British rule in India, the Russian purges and deportations, the dropping of the atom bombs on Japan […] Thus political language has to consist largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness.”

"Caso o modelo de #memóriapública institucional, no qual o Estado desempenha um papel central, não mais atenda às exigências de registro e preservação da #memóriacultural, agora predominantemente gerada e armazenada em meios digitais, torna-se crucial a formulação de projetos que explorem novos modelos de sustentabilidade e governança para #acervosculturais públicos, ou #comuns."

'In the decades following the prohibition of slavery, the United States found another way to use psychology to control Black Americans — and squeeze out more free labor. As detailed in the journalist Antonia Hylton’s fascinating “Madness,” the “feeble-minded” Blacks were rounded up and placed in asylums where they were put to work as indentured servants.'

'Half of the $18.7bn spent on R&D to tackle priority diseases between 2014 and 2022 was provided by the US government. The reliance on US funding was a “major vulnerability” that leaves pandemic preparedness “very sensitive” to political upheavals, the 100 Days Mission report said.'

'I say that because some of these papers have been out there in the literature for years now, and several of them have accumulated many skeptical comments at PubPeer over that time. And as you'd expect from a place like Dana-Farber, these didn't appear in a bunch of open-access journals that are run out of someone's van in Samarkand - no, these are scattered across Science, Nature, Cell, and other marquee sites. And I can't overemphasize just how many examples there are - that For Better Science post just goes on and on, with cut-and-paste jobs in blots, graphs, photomicrographs, you name it.'

Hi there, new server, new #introduction:

My name is Daniel Bellingradt: I am a media and communication historian with a special focus on #earlymodern Europe. I am the co-editor of "Jahrbuch für #Kommunikationsgeschichte", and I have, among other stuff, published 4 books about pamphlets, paper history, magical manuscripts, and an app trail through Hamburg in 1686.

These are my #'s: #digitalhistory, #bookhistory, #paperhistory #histodons

Here's a photo of me looking bemused into an old big book

'On Oct. 4, Aissam was treated at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, becoming the first person to get gene therapy in the United States for congenital deafness. The goal was to provide him with hearing, but the researchers had no idea if the treatment would work or, if it did, how much he would hear.

The treatment was a success, introducing a child who had known nothing of sound to a new world.'
