Musk's Twitter reinstated the account of one of America's most dangerous Nazis. It recommended that other users follow him. From the Washington Post: washingtonpost.com/technology/

'In this study, we estimated the serial interval by analyzing 109 pairs of laboratory-confirmed monkeypox in the Netherlands. After reviewing detailed exposure histories, we identified 34 pairs where the infectee reported a single potential infector. The mean serial interval for those 34 pairs was 10.1 days (95% CI: 6.6-14.7 days), suggesting a reproduction number between 1.3 and 1.6 during June 2022 in the Netherlands.'

Hello all!

I'm a PhD biologist working on using localization microscopy to build a new sequencing technology using the Julia language at a startup in Cambridge, MA.

Apart from science, my posting interests include liberal/progressive politics, current events, science fiction, video/computer/board games, and technology.

Also this is my pup, Willow. She is named after the character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 🙂

'In a now famous ‘eureka’ moment, in 1974, Franco Bottazzo, a research fellow in Deborah Doniach’s laboratory in London, was the first to successfully visualize islet cell antibodies using indirect immunofluorescence, thereby confirming the presence of antibodies reactive to the islet. During experiments originally designed to support his thesis work on Addison’s disease, he observed that pancreatic islets “lit up” after incubation with sera from some patients with polyendocrine autoimmunity, most of whom had or would go on to develop .'

On the 4th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me, a cephalocarid, Lightiella monniotae Cals & Delamare Deboutteville, 1970. It is #CephalocaridSunday after all. This weird group of meiofaunal crustacean were only discovered in the 1950's, first published on by Howard Sanders (1921-2001) while he worked on his Ph.D at Yale. #arthropoda #crustacea #Yale

#IDMastodon Omicron variants bind with higher affinity to motile cilia and show accelerated viral entry. In this #Clinicalstudy that motile cilia, microvilli, and mucociliary-dependent mucus flow are critical for efficient virus replication in nasal epithelia. @CellCellPress . Based on this study ,please wear n-95 😷 wherever you are & mostly in enclosed places to minimise the rate of #SarsCoV2 infection & reduce that’s hight viral loads

4 lectureships in #neuroscience in Bristol, UK. (2 junior, 2 senior).

Offers £39,745 - £68,823. (Not a typo, unfortunately.)

Not wanting to single out Bristol here, note all UK universities offer these ridiculously low salaries. The expectation, I can only guess, is that your partner with a higher salary subsidises the university via the institution of marriage, or you are independently wealthy, or choose not to have a family.

Big Cheese did it

"The popularity of fondue wasn't an accident. It was planned by a shadowy association of Swiss cheese makers. A cheese cartel basically ruled the Swiss economy for 80 years, until fairly recently."

"Immune checkpoint inhibitors such as pembrolizumab or nivolumab, which inhibit PD-1, have greatly improved survival for many patients with cancer, but are prohibitively expensive and unattainable for most of the global cancer population. Optimized dosing, with a reduced unit dose, less frequent schedule and/or shorter duration of treatment could reduce costs and potentially toxicity, thereby improving global access to effective cancer therapy."

"Unbeknownst to me as a young physician, certain scholars and pundits in the 1960s were opining that with the advent of highly effective vaccines for many childhood diseases and a growing array of antibiotics, the threat of infectious diseases — and perhaps, with it, the need for infectious-disease specialists — was fast disappearing."

I recently found this picture, taken in the 1930s at Le Monocle, one of the lesbian nightclubs in Paris at the time.

It's a great picture, with a lot of different people, absorbed in their own merriment, and at the center, my new reference for the concept of badass.

I don't know who she is, but she deserves a long, adventurous backstory -- maybe involving mutiny aboard an airship, spies, and broken hearts.

She's the only one looking at the camera, so the story is definitely about her.
